Fort Myers, Fla. (WSVN) — A fossil enthusiast near Fort Myers stumbled upon an extraordinary find, unearthing a fully intact mammoth jaw believed to be around 10,000 years old from the waters teeming with alligators.
John Kreatsoulas, the fossil finder from Fossil Junkies Dig and Dive Charters, expressed his amazement.
“I grabbed onto it just to hold on for a second and I realized ‘Wait a second, that’s not a tree, that was a mammoth,'” he said.
The remarkable discovery was made in an area known for its alligator presence.
Currently working to restore the ancient jaw, Kreatsoulas plans to register it with the state. If state officials decline, he said he would proudly display it in his home.
Looks like an anchor. I wonder how heavy it was heh.
All of Florida’s waters are gator infested. 😆
Yes, I have seen them in roadside ditches with 6 inches of muddy water................
Well, they both grab pachyderms by the nose !
Are they sure it isn’t where Kerry’s plastic surgeon dumped his old lantern jaw after surgery?
Too small...................
Even a mammoth needs a bit of vacation time.
Nah....moved there to escape NY taxes.
That’s the upper jaw upside down. Surprised they didn’t find the tusks. Probably collected by the natives. Since the site is on a river (thru limestone rock more than soil and sand) the mammoth may have been butchered there.
There is a guy on the E coast of FL who excavates ICW dredge pile islands since they have debris from 10s of feet below prevailing ground. Some of his finds are Mastodon and Mammoth bones and tusks. He has a Mammoth tusk with graffiti carved into it showing a hunting scene. Pre-historic Scrimshaw.
He’s going to need a CPAP machine after that.
Yep if there’s water assume there are gators.
It will be interesting to see what kind of marks are found on this find once it is cleaned up. Scars from wild creature attacks, or signs of human hunting like spear gashes.
Maybe the mammoth was doing some snorkeling and wound up drowning. :^)
You’re right though, it’ll be interesting if marks are found.
