Javier Milei, a messy-haired bombastic libertarian economist, won Argentina’s presidential elections against socialist minister of economics Sergio Massa this Sunday. With the backdrop of inflation that the International Monetary Fund projects will trail only that of Zimbabwe and Venezuela by the end of the year, Milei triumphed with over 55 percent of votes in the runoff with more than 94 percent of votes counted, according to data from the country’s National Electoral Chamber.
In a brief speech before the results were announced, Massa, who came first in the October 22 election that led to the run-off, said, “Milei is the president elected for the next four years,” adding that he had called Milei to personally congratulate him on his victory.
Milei ran on an anti-establishment platform that had the entirety of US media drawing comparisons between him and Donald Trump. In some ways, the comparisons made sense: Milei packed stadiums, slammed the mainstream media and made the occasional crude yet hilarious joke. And like Trump, he also earned himself some big enemies, including Pope Francis, who he labeled a “filthy leftist” and “the representative of the Devil on Earth.” Even more like Trump, he found himself a loyal following enamored in great part by his larger-than-life personality.
And as in America in 2016, unexpectedly for most, it took one unconventional man to supplant the conventional right. Back in August, Milei shocked the nation by getting 30 percent of the vote in the presidential primary, leaving behind both Massa and center-right Patricia Bullrich — the candidate originally backed by former president Mauricio Macri.
But unlike Trump, Milei’s so-called “far-right populism” is not what many Americans have in mind. While Milei did sit down with Tucker Carlson for an interview and welcomed the comparisons to Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro and Trump, his philosophy is distinctly libertarian. He has called for an Ayn Rand-styled “Atlas rebellion” and literally destroyed a central bank piñata on national TV....
Everyone should watch Tucker Carlson’s interview with Meliel. Its fantastic
However, if libertarians get half of what they ask for then things often get worse, even from a libertarian's perspective.
Immigration is a perfect example. If you get open borders but you can't eliminate welfare payments, then you get people flooding into the country who will eventually become citizens and vote for more government and welfare payments.
Libertarianism is more utopian than communism. At least the communists realize that people don't really want to be communist and must be reeducated to tolerate it or otherwise eliminated. The libertarians oppose forced reeducation so they are forever trying to implement libertarian policies in countries where the vast majority of people don't want them.
When I moved there in the 90's I was surprised to find so many houses in covenant communities, i.e. HOAs.
That one guy who left his car on blocks in the front yard certainly had a hand in it.
Yep. Libertarians can be left or right. It sounds like Milei is a right-leaning libertarian.
Refugee means that you temporarily move to the next country over or so, it does not mean that you win the lottery and move to London, or New York City, or Paris, or Stockholm.
Your post 42 is a very good post, a very good description.
Regarding their utopian fantasies, when they defend open borders with their no social program response, I tell them great! You first end welfare and the social programs, THEN we will talk about immigration.
Libertarians know they can get all the immigration they want, but they also know they can’t end welfare and the social programs, so it makes you wonder about either their sanity, or their true politics.
You think they are bad about immigration, you should look into their refusal to take a stand against pedophilia and NAMBLA.
There is a reason NAMBLA guys identify as libertarians.
Communist <> Socialist <> Democrat <> Republican <> Libertarian <> Minarchist <> Anarchist
Counting ballots in the US 2020 election required reprogramming on the fly. Takes more time than counting paper ballots
Really bad take. It would be like saying Republicans support the Ukraine war and CR instead of budgets and increases in federal spending. There are many Libertarians who are open border and there are many who are not. The smart ones are not.
If you only listen to establishment Libertarians like CATO or Reason, you would think that open borders is the only libertarian position but it is not. You would be similarly uninformed if you listened to establishment Republican sources like Fox News to get the complete opinion of all of the Republicans.
Check out these guys...

Yes! The more I hear of this man, the more I like him.
If he is effective, the DS will eliminate him...........
Excellent!
I don’t think the DS has as much power there as in other places.
We are familiar with the shape-shifting libertarians.
I posted their party’s firm position on immigration, and I also mentioned their take on pedophilia and NAMBLA to date.
100 years ago, Argentina was considered to be a first world country.
There’s a strong gay rights contingent in libertarianism.
Salvador Allende might disagree.................
