Immigration is a perfect example. If you get open borders but you can't eliminate welfare payments, then you get people flooding into the country who will eventually become citizens and vote for more government and welfare payments.
Libertarianism is more utopian than communism. At least the communists realize that people don't really want to be communist and must be reeducated to tolerate it or otherwise eliminated. The libertarians oppose forced reeducation so they are forever trying to implement libertarian policies in countries where the vast majority of people don't want them.

Regarding their utopian fantasies, when they defend open borders with their no social program response, I tell them great! You first end welfare and the social programs, THEN we will talk about immigration.
Libertarians know they can get all the immigration they want, but they also know they can’t end welfare and the social programs, so it makes you wonder about either their sanity, or their true politics.
