The latest in a series of crises, the Israel-Hamas war is turning a perfect storm for colleges and universities into a tsunami. In polls taken before October, only 36 percent of Americans said they have confidence in higher education, down from 57 percent in 2015. A majority think higher education isn’t worth the time and money; two years ago, almost 60 percent thought it was. Student debt totals $1.75 trillion, up 75 percent in the last 10 years. Most Americans think higher education is unaffordable and is going in the wrong direction.

One solution to cut costs and make college more affordable is that professors don't need to make more than about $65.000 a year.

I am all for student loan forgiveness and it should come out of the endowments of the sleazy universities that exploited dumb 18 year-olds for their student loan dollars.

Like all other bubbles, the “higher education bubble” is caused by massive debt in printed fiat money, fed to a preferred leftist political block, by politicians for political reasons.

Want to cut it down to size? End ALL federally subsidized or controlled loan programs. End the Dept of Education.

Can the universities make money by selling themselves short? Business, right?

“Higher education” is nothing more than a withdrawal program from Head Start and Kindergarten for America’s retarded kiddies.

Smart Jewish culture always combines higher education with learning a trade.

More administrators than professors. Cut administrative staff to 30% of current levels. Colleges have built up amenities to attract students and professors which costs a lot in payments and upkeep.. They have plenty of classroom space. Decrease athletic teams travel and number of teams. Cut state and federal govt spending. Cut subjects. Keep STEM and classics, history, philosophy, languages, cultures, that’s about it. Any other distinctive subjects taught is on the college and students dime.

Professors salaries are small potatoes. Most of the larger universities could stand to gut a large part of their administrative staffs. Lots of Directors, etc. could stand getting out in the real world and produce real things.

That’s simply not realistic. Some things that would help though:
1. Having more ideological diversity in the faculty and staff.
2. Reducing staffing levels, especially in things like DEI and HR. If a position wasn’t there 40 years ago, it should be scrutinized very carefully now.
3. Make some objective admission criteria mandatory for f
Federal financial aid.
4. More fairness is what speech is allowed on campus
5. Shut down campus mobs and expel students who violate the rights of others — regardless of who the others are. There should not be two sets of standards for students.
6. Get rid of nutjob departments and faculty

What do you mean? $400K a year for teaching one or two classes a term, with most of the work done by your TA is not nearly enough. Commie professors have to eat too, you know! /s

There is nothing you can learn at a university that you can’t learn for free on YouTube.

“There is nothing you can learn at a university that you can’t learn for free on YouTube.”

Employers looked to colleges to provide people who could produce under pressure.

Another solution is for colleges and universities to require professors to actually teach full-time instead of passing the teaching stuff to grad students.

“Higher education” is a misnomer. It is just higher indoctrination. It is becoming obvious that “students” are being brainwashed in the liberal ideology and not being taught critical thinking, history, STEM etc. It amazes me that parents and students pay the vast amount of money required just to be indoctrinated into Leftism.
