Weekly Garden Thread - November 11-17, 2023 [Roasted Vegetable Recipes Edition]
November 11, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 11/11/2023 5:55:25 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We DO post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

You’ll never want ‘Butternut’ any other way from now on. :)

Told hubby that you said that. He would not eat squash the old way. He was willing to try it because of what you said. He likes it and will eat it! I still had lots of thyme in the garden so I tossed the squash in with that and some other things. Roasting also concentrates the flavor.

Thank you! Glad to have served. :)

Rhubarb can tolerate a LOT of conditions, but WET ain’t one of them. High & Dry. And be ‘mean’ to it. I throw a shovel-full of compost on it in the Spring every few years and that’s all the ‘care’ she gets other than a spray with the garden hose in REALLY dry seasons, like the one we just had.

And ours is an OLD planting of Rhubarb. ‘Victoria Red.’ At least 15 years in the same spot.

And actually we grow the butterkin. Smaller and great flavor, dark flesh.

Mom! I know you have a paste tomato that you swear by, but can’t remember which it is?

My ‘Personal Faves’ are:

Opalka
Principe Borghese
San Marzano
Margherita

I like the idea of adding Thyme in there, too! And some Garlic never hurts. ;)

My Lemon Thyme - which is my fave and was in one of my porch pots - had to go to the compost pile today AFTER some vigorous clipping. ;) We’ve stretched this warm Fall out about as far as we can this season - colder weather ahead by the weekend. But NO SNOW in the forecast, which is nice because we usually have some snow right before Deer Season. So, I’m happy, but the hunters in the family will be sad.

(We will have a houseful this coming weekend with hunters coming and going...)

I just had a brainstorm! If YOUR Husband likes my ideas, maybe YOU can tell MY ‘Husband’ to hurry up on the Chicken Coop and the barn remodel? LOL! Can’t hurt, might help!

Opalka from seedsavers sounds like a winner. Indeterminate but processing in batches will probably work with my schedule.

They are Sabre tomatoes. Have grown them for years. Some only have 4 seeds. Hardly any liquid and great flavor. A good friend swears by Opalka. We had 4 San Marzano bushes this year just for the heck of it but the yield was just not there. Sabres are a Ukranian variety. And they consistently last longer into the fall than any other. So great for Michigan. Two weeks after all other varieties are dead these bushes were still green and growing.

Thought he would be done by now. Hubby doesn’t freep. He’s been a lurker as long as I have been a member. But you are mistaken, I have always been the builder in the family.

Beau, you are both so blessed. Between you both you have so many skills. A real power couple. Hunter/Gatherer props to you both. The way Diana stepped up to keep the gardening threads going has helped so many including myself. And we hear chickens and fresh eggs are on the horizon. Good hunting this fall. We love hearing about your trips. Happy Thanksgiving!

Yep, here it comes

Tuesday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 28. Blustery.

Blustery

Can’t wait for Bitterly Cold

Guess I’ll put that new carburetor on the splitter today and get it going. Round up the chain saw, two-stroke oil, bar and chain lube and get my pallet firewood racks and the indoor wood rack cleared off of misc catchall stuff tossed on them over the year.

Cut and split some logs I have sitting up here and the boy can split and stack them inside.

Gonna try and get a pair of tunnel frame holes dug. I’ve got two bags of ready mix sitting outside and it would be nice to use them today instead of trying to cover or put in the shed. Looks like we’ll get some rain first of next week. Hopefully enough to make digging easier.

I got 80 lb bags of ready mix which I hate but it’s what Ace had and it worked out to an 80 lb bag being perfect for one tunnel frame hole so I guess I’ll continue to get and use them.

Our deer firearms season started the 11th and goes to the 21st and as happens every year, that’s about the time I want to cut wood but hate making all the noise. I was grinding on tunnel frames last Saturday but waited until 11:30am and was done by 3pm and it was warm out.

High of 69 today and low of 53 tonight so I’ll be making some noise today but I work this weekend when it will be cooler. Sat and Sun mornings down around freezing.

Hunting season is a little nerve wracking for us. Stick frame house surrounded by three large properties that people hunt and those rounds go quite a ways. Hopefully they all keep in mind where we are and where they’re aiming when they pull that trigger.

Kind of why I do make some noise on a couple of the warmer days.

uh oh, another project to add to my list.

Back up into a large pile of compost and get a scoop full. Drive down the bed and disperse it nice and evenly.

Although he doesn't have a hose going to it in the pic below, I'm pretty sure that's a hydraulic motor to drive the paddles.

Gonna have to build me one of these.

Every try Speckled Roman?

https://www.superseeds.com/collections/tomatoes/products/speckled-roman-tomato-81-days
https://shop.seedsavers.org/speckled-roman-organic-tomato

Seem fairly similar to Opalka and get good reviews.

From post #148.

That’s the one I couldn’t remember. If it’s that good in MI it should do great for me in WI. And Pollard should be swimming in them down south. :)

Mom: Is there a special place to get seed?

Yep. Seed Savers carried it when I worked for them, and I see it still does. It is very much like ‘Opalka’ with stripes.

I’m on the hunt now for ‘Sabre’ so if you see it, send me a link!

Seed Savers has ‘Ukrainian Purple’ which is AKA ‘Russian Purple.’ I guess they’ll have to re-name it if Putin re-takes Ukraine.

Or could it be Sabelka??

Interesting conversation here on amishland seeds, “the only source for Ukraine Sabre”. I guess amishland seeds is a female that tends to rename existing varieties and sell them as one of a kind exotics that no one else has.

Second to last comment here as well - https://www.vegarden.com/2007/05/sabre-ukrainian-tomatoes/

Either way, Sabelka, Ukraine Sabre, unobtainium. There is a Sabre tomato I guess but it’s a round pink slicer.

Well I looked through my old bookmarks, it was amishlandseeds.com. Looks like they are out of business, website is no more and their facebook page talks about an accident in 2020 and stopping operations. Yikes, I'll look through what I have I might have planted them all this year. Here is a nice picture from 2021 of a comparison between a sabre and a san marzano or roma, can't remember which. Sabres come to a point at the end. 0-02-01-2852dacf40387e9991e1b61f5aba7e3e2e3521153f398d0b18887079c99f239a-4a5ae9124fb5319
