Who is the real Buffy Sainte-Marie? (not an Indian, feather)
CBC ^ | 10-27-23 | Geoff Leo, Roxanna Woloshyn and Linda Guerriero

However, almost 50 years after stepping onto Sesame Street, the iconic singer-songwriter’s claims to Indigenous ancestry are being contradicted by members of her own family and an extensive CBC investigation.

Late last year, CBC received a tip that Sainte-Marie is not of Cree ancestry but, in fact, has European roots. She is the latest high-profile public figure whose ancestry story has been contradicted by genealogical documentation, including her own birth certificate, historical research and personal accounts — the latest chapter in the complex and growing debate around Indigenous identity in Canada.

Indigenous scholars like Kim TallBear, a professor of Native studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and a member of Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, say it’s unacceptable for non-Indigenous people to speak for Indigenous people and take honours set aside for them.

“It’s theft of opportunities, resources. It’s theft of our stories,” she said.

Which is typically given to Canadians

Given to a Canadian's what?

Same applies to your tagline. Inserting an apostrophe into "Nazis" changes the word from a Plural into a Singular Possessive.

Regards,

Canadians (French: Canadiens) are people identified with the country of Canada.

Just for context... Americans are the citizens and nationals of the United States of America.

Notice that there is no ‘s? That’s because it isn’t required when referring to Canadians or Americans. English teachers... Their funny people’s.

She wants to clarify...it's Cree Lighting, not the Cree Nation. She apologizes for any misunderstanding.

"Indigenous scholars like Kim TallBear... say it’s unacceptable for non-Indigenous people to speak for Indigenous people and take honours set aside for them."

I have to wholeheartedly disagree. In this day and age of "identifying as" and "physically transitioning" to whatever the heck an individual wants to be...claiming native American heritage is not wrong. While I, me and us don't agree with the trend of claiming to be what you aren't, who gets to decide what you're allowed to claim? This lady was just on the leading edge of this insanity. Laugh at her behind her back, if you will...but leave her alone.

///I don’t know whose version is true, hers or CBC, but I find it interesting that it seems to matter so much. She obviously felt some bond with the Crees of Saskatchewan.///

It was a full scam
“In the space of those 10 months, she was referred to as Algonquin, full-blooded Algonquin, Mi’kmaq, half-Mi’kmaq and Cree.
“It’s immediately problematic when you see something like that,” said Teillet.

“Early in her career, she was referred to generically as “an American Indian.”

But over time, the references became more specific.

In March 1963, Florida’s Fort Lauderdale News said she was “a full-blooded Algonquin Indian.” That was echoed in a New York Times article in August of that year, which called her “a young Algonquin Indian girl.”

Then, in October, the Detroit Free Press reported that “Buffy was born a Micmac (Mi’kmaq) Indian in Maine,” adding that “her Micmac name is Tsankapasa, or Dark Fawn.” Later that same month, the Boston Herald said she referred to herself as “half-Micmac by birth.”

The first reference to Sainte-Marie being Cree that CBC could locate came in December 1963, when the Vancouver Sun referred to “Cree Indian folk singer Buffy St. Marie.”

In the space of those 10 months, she was referred to as Algonquin, full-blooded Algonquin, Mi’kmaq, half-Mi’kmaq and Cree.

“It’s immediately problematic when you see something like that,” said Teillet.”

It was 1969, I barely knew who Buffy St.Marie was, let alone there was any controversy about her ancestry. We didn’t put the sister under a hot lamp and interrogate her. She believed and stated she was her sister, just as simple as that. It was on the Piapot reserve. Buffy looked like a lot of the Cree women we saw there, but that proves nothing. If Buffy is a fake Indian, that’s on her.

Wow….not only was she a fake, she used a lawyer to threaten her own family from exposing her and even sent her brother a hand-written letter accusing him of sexually abusing her as a child in an effort to intimidate him into shutting up about who she really was. This woman is an absolute POS.

Keep America Beautiful’s actions have been criticized as greenwashing. The organization’s narrow focus on littering and recycling diverts responsibility away from corporations and industries.

Despite self-identifying as having Native American ancestry with the stage name of Iron Eyes Cody, Espera Oscar DeCorti was of Italian descent. This sparked accusations of cultural appropriation and racial stereotyping. In February 2023, the Keep America Beautiful organization transferred ownership of the ad’s copyright to the National Congress of American Indians, who intend to restrict use of the ad to only historical purposes.

Heather Rogers, creator of the 2005 documentary film Gone Tomorrow. The Hidden Life of Garbage and book of the same name, classifies Keep America Beautiful as one of the first greenwashing corporate fronts. She asserts that the group was created in response to Vermont’s 1953 attempt to legislate a mandatory deposit to be paid at point of purchase on disposable beverage containers and banning the sale of beer in non-refillable bottles.

I’m really disappointed. She wrote decent songs, did a lot of good, in her way; and nothing would have been much different if she hadn’t lied about herself.

I think I have one old album, somewhere; it’s going in the dumpster as soon as I dig it up.

I can deal with a lot of things, when it comes to talented people. But I despise liars and people who threaten others to cover their lies.
