My high school history teacher hated the book Connections.
I carried it most ever day to class.

Dick Van Dyke Show was absolutely priceless
I read that they didn’t even script Morey Amsterdam. They just wrote Buddy tells jokes, 50 seconds.
I knew a guy who was a Vaudeville comedian way back in the day. Every time we spoke I thought of Morey Amsterdam.

My favorites scripted fictional shows: The Rockford Files; Kolchak, the Nightstalker; X-Files; Supernatural; Frasier; The Sopranos; Mad Men; The Walking Dead; Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, its spinoff; Justified and spinoff Justified: City Primeval; Game of Thrones; and Yellowstone.
These shows all feature strong narratives and often (but not always) traditional subject matter and themes; excellent writing and acting; main characters who are both admirable and flawed in varying degrees; and with solid supporting characters in family, work relationships, as adversaries, and as friends.
Moreover, these shows take place in and keep true to a well-imagined world that puts characters in situations that are different to but still recognizable in ordinary experience. Notably, all of these shows had show creators with large degrees of creative control. And conservative ideas and themes sometimes pop out.

Mad Men was a great recreation of the early ‘60s, but it tried too hard to be politically correct and make pat little feminist lessons.
Also, I don’t think the showrunner/creator had much of an overall plot vision or exercised much control over his underlings.

Justified was really good. Loved that bad guy who looked like a young Jack Nicholson.
Tried to explain to wife that Hollywood likes return/re-establish doppelganger. She changed her thinking when I said who does” Decaprio” remind you of?
Watch an old movie. You will find him.
