Scientists have discovered widespread differences in metal levels in the brains of patients with Huntington's disease, a type of dementia.
The elements, including selenium (a metalloid), sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, and manganese, were studied in 11 parts of the brain.
In particular, the scientists found substantial decreases in selenium levels in all 11 regions of the HD brains, calculating there was a high risk of having the disease when levels are low.
Increased sodium and potassium ratios were observed in every region except the substantia nigra, and many of the regions showed increased calcium and/or zinc levels. Localized decreases in iron, copper, and manganese were present in the globus pallidus, cerebellum, and substantia nigra, respectively.
Selenium is known to have an important role in protection against oxidative stress—an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants which can damage organs and tissues and lead to HD.
It is also implicated in the dysfunction of mitochondria, one of the main powerhouses of human cells, which is also known to occur in the development of HD.
Sodium and potassium play an important role in the central nervous system by regulating the conduction of electrical nerve impulses.
Calcium, zinc, iron copper and manganese are also involved in processes as wide-ranging as gene expression, cell signaling, and cell death.
"We caution that it is dangerous to self-medicate with supplements; the blood-brain barrier could mean these could elements might build up in someone's blood stream, with potentially toxic effects."
Professor Garth Cooper said, "The most striking finding is the deficiency of selenium in every part of the brain we studied.
"Because selenium was deficient in all regions of the brain, that might mean it could be easier to one day target therapeutically, as it's very hard to home in on specific brain regions.

It seems selenium is chronically missing, for some reason. It could be diet, or, perhaps, the body is excessively expelling it.
Get on eatin’ your Brazil nuts!
If your family has Huntington’s disease, the best way to stop it... Don’t reproduce.
That is not what I knew them as growing up.
Only 5 or 6 Brazil nuts or you may get Selenium poisoning.
Since Brazil nuts can vary in the amount of selenium they have, I just take a 200mcg selenium supplement daily. It has helped lower my inflammation and anti-thyroid antibodies.
Eat more mushrooms...
All the major nutrients need a lot more study. While researching cancer last year (3 loved ones afflicted), I read a study of 9 major cancers. Two, liver and prostate, were of special interest to me. The study found the cancer tissues in all 9 cancers were deficient in ZNIC, even when surrounding healthy tissues were sufficient or even overflowing with ZINC. One corageous researcher even suggested having cancer patients take an ionophore (name unknown to me) along with Zinc to fight their cancers.
I immediately added Quercitin and Zinc to the daily supplements of my prostate and liver cancer suffering loved ones. I then read another paper saying Astaxanthin, which I had been using successfuly to improve my cataracts, had cancer uses. It appears Astaxanthin causes more speady natural death of cancer cells (apoptosis) while helping normal tissue cells have a longer life. I immediately added Astaxanthin to the supplements my cancer patients were taking. Both were doing well toward healing until the one with liver metastesis had his 4th Covid shot. His cancer lessions immediately started growing again (they had been shrinking) and his oncologist put him on a much stronger, more unpleasant schemotherapy. He had run out of several of the supplements I had sent him, and then my supplement supplier had trouble shipping an order I made on Sept. 26th. I was told today they shipped it today. Grrrrr. So we now await his most recent body scan to see how he is doing. Meanwhile he finally bought some supplements he needed at CVS, and tomorrow I will order the more unusual ones sent to him from my supplier. The fight continues.

How much daily to improve cataracts? Thx!
Over the past 50+ years I have added a number of supplements to my daily morning and evening supplies. At least 30 supplements in the morning, and over 20 at night.
Astaxanthin is one of several I added specifically for Cataracts. In this case 10 mg. each, morning and evening. Also Bilberry Fruit Extract, 1000 mg. morning and evening, Lutien 20 mg. morning and evening and Blueberry/Eyebright Complex, which also has Marygold and Grape Seed. I finally received Zeaxanthin which I will be adding morning and evening in the amount of one tablet. All these I get from Puritan’s Pride, although I have also bought from Walmart and health food stores.
I see my new Zeaxanthin is 4 mg. and Lutien 10 mg. so I will have to readjust my packets regarding the 20 mg Lutien I take now. I guess I will take one new tablet (with the 10 mg. Lutien in the morning, and take another one plus a Lutien 20 mg. in the evening, so I will be getting 30 mg. Lutien in the evening. Since I believe the eye supplements are mostly healing, it is good to have them in the evening to do healing while asleep. Supplements that create energy like Ginseng and others are good to take in the morning. For people who are 85 years old like me, I take many both morning and evening.
Years ago I was at a workshop where we learned about which supplements to use to support the catabolic energy cycle, and which to use to support the anabolic healing cycle. I suppose one could Google “nutrition and supplements to support catabolism”, and the similar to get information on anabolism. Must try it myself. Good luck.
I have found Swanson Vitamins to be better quality, and often a better deal, than Puritan’s Pride.
One of the things I like most about them is the amount of single ingredient supplements they carry.
For for FWIW, for anyone interested, here’s a link to their page.

Also, they regularly have sales. You’re not going to get your best deals by buying impulsively. Watch for their sales.
Thanks, I have been planning to check out Swansons, also life Extension. PP has extended their most recent sale to the end of this month. Currently 3 for the price of one. That runs maybe twice a year for several months.
I just used your link. I entered live chat and asked for a phone number to call like I do with PP. They kept asking for my email so they could find my account. I kept saying I had NO account, and wanted a phone number. After 3 go rounds, they cancelled my chat. Is it possible to get an order using their phone number. I hate using email to order. PP sends me their catalog with their phone number. Any way to get a phone number for Samson’s? I have to bother my partner for any problems with email or computer and I really hate to be dependent on him as he may die before I do. Also I may go blind at some point which would make email even more difficult than phone.
I thought you could just go online and buy stuff without an account, as a guest.
Since I have one, I honestly don’t know.
