Drinking coffee or tea may be beneficial for physical function in aging (Much less frailty)
Medical Xpress / National University of Singapore / Journal of the American Medical Directors Assoc ^ | Oct. 6, 2023 | Kevin Y. Chua et al

Drinking coffee and tea at midlife may be associated with a reduced likelihood of physical frailty in late life. A study has shown that adults, who consumed higher intake of caffeine via the drinking of coffee or tea, had significantly better physical function at late life.

The study was conducted based on information collected from over 12,000 participants, aged 45 to 74 years old, over a follow-up period of 20 years.

Coffee and tea were the main sources of caffeine intake in this cohort, accounting for 84% and 12% of total caffeine, respectively. A total of 68.5% of the participants drank coffee daily. In this group, 52.9% of them drank one cup a day, 42.2% consumed two to three cups per day while the remaining 4.9% drank four or more cups per day.

Our results showed that drinking coffee, black tea or green tea at midlife were independently associated with significantly reduced likelihood of physical frailty at late life. Participants who drank four or more cups of coffee per day had significantly reduced odds of physical frailty at late life, compared to participants who did not drink coffee daily. Participants who drank black tea, green tea daily also had significantly reduced odds of physical frailty, compared to non-tea drinkers.

The researchers further evaluated the association between caffeine intake and the odds of physical frailty in late life. Higher caffeine intake was associated with lower odds of physical frailty, regardless of the source of caffeine. Among the four components of physical frailty, the associations were stronger for the measured tests of handgrip strength and TUG, than for the self-reported measures of weight loss and exhaustion.

Interestingly, in other experimental research, caffeine has been shown to increase proliferation in muscle cells and improve muscle weight in mice.

Just trying to keep up.

“four or more cups of coffee per day”

The benefits are more than offset by loss of sleep hours and lousy sleep quality. At that level few days, I get an ultra-nervous, edgy feeling that I just cannot escape. I limit myself to two cups in the morning, one regular and one decaf, then that’s it for the rests of the day.

For years, I’ve been buying one or two pounds of whole beans at coffee roasters I find in our travels. Right now I’m really enjoying beans and roasts from roasters in Calgary, AB and Twisp, WA.

These studies are such BS. “May be”, “could be”, “should be”. Do a study on the vax and advertise the truth about it. That’s all the public needs.

lol

that used to happen to me for years, until I figured out that the coffee wasn’t giving me the headaches it was a withdrawal symptom from not drinking coffee often enough!

Once I figured out I needed at a minimum 2 cups a day spread out with one in the morning and another near the end of lunch they went away completely.

I’m an addict, so these studies are irrelevant. ;-)

“But it can give me headaches.”

The opposite, really. Not having coffee when you normally would puts you in withdrawal. I’ve never had worse headaaches in my life than with caffeine withdrawal. Even the Covid headache wasn’t as bad.

I also drink my coffee spread throughout the day — about for cups total. Two in the morning, one after lunch, and one around dinner time. If I start to get “that” niggling headache I realize I missed a cup, and head for the Keurig.

I understand it’s my drug of choice. Not proud of it.

“Caffeine is associated with healthier aging”

For as long as I can remember, Mom and Dad drank coffee throughout the day. Mom will turn 100 in a few months, and her hand grip is super strong. Fingers are numbing some, but the hand itself is strong.

She goes out with friends and to church and her memory is scary good.

took me over 5 years to figure out what was happening. For a long time I thought I was allergic to it!

LOL

But I will say technically it is not the coffee, it’s the caffeine that we are addicted to that we suffer withdraw symptoms from. 2 cups is the least I can get away with, adding a 3rd around 4ish in the after noon and I am more productive in general, but that one is optional when it comes to the headaches.
