A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage in connection with the felling of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian’s Wall.

The boy remains in custody and is assisting officers with their inquiries, Northumbria Police said on Thursday afternoon.

Superintendent Kevin Waring, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a world-renowned landmark and the events of today have caused significant shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond.

“An investigation was immediately launched following this vandalism, and this afternoon we have arrested one suspect in connection with our inquiries.

“Given our investigation remains at a very early stage, we are keeping an open mind. I am appealing to the public for information to assist us – if you have seen or heard anything suspicious that may be of interest to us, please let us know.”

The world-famous Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian’s Wall, which was felled in the middle of the night by vandals, could be saved, experts hope.

The fallen tree, which dates from the 18th century, was discovered by walkers in Northumberland on Thursday morning after someone took a chainsaw to its trunk overnight.

The Woodland Trust has said it was 'horrible' to see that the tree had been felled CREDIT: Owen Humphreys/PA The sycamore was voted Woodland Trust Tree of the Year in 2016 and was visited by tens of thousands of walkers each year – even featuring in the 1991 film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, which starred Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.

Kim McGuinness, the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, said she was “incandescent” and the force vowed to “use every tactic at our disposal” to find the culprit.

Bruce Wayne: So, how did they finally stop them?

Alfred: They burned down the whole forest.

Maple, Birch, Popular are all huge stump sprouters. Not sure about Sycamore. Whenever I cut down any of those trees I pour undiluted Roundup right around the stump along the cambium layer. That is the living part of the tree between the bark and the wood that conducts sap between the roots and the leaves.

LE keeping an open mind. Uh, looks like the tree is down and there are clearly saw marks. No matter whether Robin was real or if he’d ever set eyes on it, the tree didn’t belong to the little punk and it was an act of vandalism. He must not have a daddy or daddy is a confused wimp who doesn’t know how to use a belt (bring on the pearl clutchers).

Most likely rolled or slid. That is why when you cut a tree down you step back away from it. Even a small tree could hit and kill you.

“cut down every one of the 200 year old oak trees out of the 20 acres of woods behind our house”

I wonder were there trees once where your house now stands whose cutting someone lamented.

This is true for me.

Measure the dimensions of the tree and make the boy and his family PAY to replace it in kind. Until then the boy stays in juvenile detention. If it cost $50,000 to $100,000 great.

To fell a tree that big you have to think about it because it takes quite a long time. It also makes a lot of noise all that time.

Some wood glue and 2x4s and it will be as good as new.
= = =

Almost.

Fasten trunk back up. Steel in the core, maybe. Exterior bracing.

Then “Bridge Graft” from the stump to the trunk.

Bracing will probably have to be permament.

I wonder if he rode his bike or scooter on that trail and the tree was in his way and he hid the handle bars all the time?

Looks to be at least 10 ft off the trail.

Hope they check all the cell phones at school to see if he did this for Tik Tok or some equally crap app.

Looking at Britain and the USA today that actually might be a better system. At least you might get a decent ruler some of the time. Versus never.
