A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage in connection with the felling of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian’s Wall.
The boy remains in custody and is assisting officers with their inquiries, Northumbria Police said on Thursday afternoon.
Superintendent Kevin Waring, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a world-renowned landmark and the events of today have caused significant shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond.
“An investigation was immediately launched following this vandalism, and this afternoon we have arrested one suspect in connection with our inquiries.
“Given our investigation remains at a very early stage, we are keeping an open mind. I am appealing to the public for information to assist us – if you have seen or heard anything suspicious that may be of interest to us, please let us know.”
The world-famous Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian’s Wall, which was felled in the middle of the night by vandals, could be saved, experts hope.
The fallen tree, which dates from the 18th century, was discovered by walkers in Northumberland on Thursday morning after someone took a chainsaw to its trunk overnight.
The Woodland Trust has said it was 'horrible' to see that the tree had been felled CREDIT: Owen Humphreys/PA The sycamore was voted Woodland Trust Tree of the Year in 2016 and was visited by tens of thousands of walkers each year – even featuring in the 1991 film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, which starred Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.
Kim McGuinness, the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, said she was “incandescent” and the force vowed to “use every tactic at our disposal” to find the culprit.

PinGGG!......................
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
“...could be saved.”
Some wood glue and 2x4s and it will be as good as new.
Stupid kid.
I do not understand WHY someone would do that.
Based on the picture, it was the only tree along that section of the wall. What would be the motivation to cut it down?
No description of the perp, so my bet is the answer would be obvious if it were revealed.
Wow, no words for this. The ‘youts’ that trash art, destroy property, start horrendous forest fires, and now kill a landmark tree that is probably a few hundred years old...makes you want to give them a beat down.
He will grow up to lead his nation from tyranny.
Social media credit from the anti everythings.
Fid he pull a sword from a stone or get one from a wet lady?................
They can keep careful watch over a stump sprout. That much is true.
I recall reading an article about young kid’s brains. (Although it was younger than 16 iirc). But younger kids do stuff and really don’t think about it. Although I imagine much of it is just to see the reaction that they will get. (Like little Johnny pulling on Susie’s pony tail).
16 years old? I wonder if he rode his bike or scooter on that trail and the tree was in his way and he hid the handle bars all the time? Probably not, but...
They are "keeping an open mind" -- How about temporarily stand the tree back up and hang the culprits from a tall branch.
"experts hope it can be saved" -- With what? Microvascular surgery? It's like cutting a person in two at the waist and hoping they can sew him back together. I'd like to hear more from these experts.
It's be like sewing this guy's arms back on.
Some teen boys are just plain destructive assholes. My brother was one. He would delight in breaking other peoples stuff.....................
The motivation is to destroy things that give pleasure to other people. The POS who did it probably thought (and still thinks) it’s funny. I’m sure he’ll get a stern talking to if found guilty. After all it’s not like he did something serious like video Muslims raping a woman. This reminds me of the three rock throwers in Colorado who killed a woman. One of them “liked to cause chaos”. Unlike the UK there is a reasonable chance in Colorado they will get some serious jail time.
Hadrian’s Wall is a long way from Robin Hood’s stomping grounds, and the 18th century was long after Robin Hood’s day.

A TikTok video and some likes?
would a descriptionless perp have access to a working man’s tools like a chainsaw?
