Do you remember the 21st night of September? Probably not because it's currently the morning of September 21. But it's not too early to celebrate because it's officially Earth, Wind & Fire Day in honor of their iconic "September" song.
Since its release in 1978, "September" has become a universally beloved track, selling millions of copies globally and causing countless people to stop what they're doing and start boogying anytime those horns kick in.
But why did the legendary band decide to shout out September 21 on the track at all? It turns out, it was likely chosen at random, at least according to Allee Willis, who co-wrote the track with Al McKay and Maurice White.
"There is no significance beyond it just sang better than any of the other dates," Willis told NPR in 2014.
Whatever the meaning behind it, the 45-year-old song has remained relevant, in large part because it is a certified banger. But it's also had some help staying in the cultural consciousness.

Amen! Mind sharing a few modern artists you've found? I've spent a lot of time wading through the swamp looking for them.
A question ive been asking myself : Rap, hip-hop, gangsta’ rap, “drill” etc....
When will all of this type of music move on? What will emerge out of all this? It so dominates our culture-
does anyone here think there is more than this from the black community?
Good song. I have their Best Of CD around here somewhere.
My favorite thing about EW&F though is when the horn section starting recording with Phill Collins. I was listening to some of that just yesterday. They did many songs/albums together, this may have been near the first:

My Dad’s birthdate, my hire date for current job, and lottery card number purchased today. Two out of three are winners.
Gratitude album won me over to this band back in the day.
Yes, the orchestration is fantastic on that song.
Had a friend in college, white guy from Chicago, that had hair just like that. That was 1974-78. ;O)
1975 had plenty of problems too.
“Hey man, got any blow?”
It was the sequence of Interlude No. 2 and Can’t Hide Love on their Gratitude album that made for a most memorable moment in life.
Shared headphones late at night in Mom and Dad’s living room, listening with Garard turntable and Marantz amplifier. We both burst out in astonishment at that point in the album. Woke Dad up, and he was not real happy about the two young stoners with an umbilical to his hi-fi.
Oh, wow! Had all their albums. Would have killed to have seen them live back in the day!
When I tried out for drum major..I directed “In The Stone”. Loved it. Knew all the cues.
September 21 was proclaimed “Hank Williams Day” in 1954 by Alabama governor Gordon Persons.
Hank Williams died January 1 1953, at the age of 29.
“Was that the one with the spinning piano?”
I don’t recall that in particular, it was more like a massive laser light show, and of course, the band was great. The thing about EW&F was that outside of Verdine, Maurice, and Philip Bailey, the players were not all that spectacular, but as a band they smoked. I still remember Verdine, moving his body in 16 different directions at the same time, LOL.
Most of that is prog and not all necessarily brand new, but certainly not 50 years old like most music I listen to.

I take it you know of Leonid and Friends on YouTube, they have a killer cover of that tune.
I’d love to go back. I am rather obsessed with the topic. Just counted 57 fiction books of novels and shot stories (and another 19 nonfiction) of time travel.
Started reading them in 1954 in elementary school.

Sorry but the date stamp on your self-portrait cell phone photo shows it was yesterday.😁
Thanks. I just cast that from this iPad to the den TV, soundbar, and surrounds. It’s nice having an AppleTV for stuff like that.
