All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
CottonBall

Posted on 09/16/2023 3:07:53 PM PDT by CottonBall

This is an ongoing thread – meaning come back to chat, post information, or ask questions any time. Hopefully the thread won’t stagnate and I’ll do better at posting weekly (or bi-weekly) topics than I have in the past. (anyone willing to post a topic now and then we'll be highly praised and appreciated).

We are in for some bumpy rides, and prepping can only help. If for peace of mind, if nothing else. We have a wonderful gardening thread and a current-events survival/prepping thread, and hopefully this one can piggyback off of those, maybe having a longer discussion about certain topics or … whatever. It's your thread, do what you like with it! (civilly, of course)

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

That makes sense. In my one-time usage of the canner, it has a lot more metal to it than the presto did. So it will retain its heat a lot more as well. it ‘felt’ more robust and more than a little scary, although I do love the way it looks

I have to remember people can post anything they want on youtube. No matter how ludicrous.

Unless of course, it is conservative.

metmom :” I just leave them in the box.
It’s oxygen that makes things deteriorate so if the oxygen is kept down, it should be a problem.
Also, when I buy lids, I date the box with the purchase year and constantly rotate my stock.
Never had a problem with them.”

I was wondering if a “Food Saver”, or a vacuum process would add to the longevity of the rubber ring and prevent oxidation ?

I think Ellendra has experience with the Tattler canning lids.

Let’s see what she thinks. :)

Two-thirds of North America may experience power shortages this winter – NERC

More than half of the U.S. and parts of Canada, home to around 180 million people, could fall short of electricity during extreme cold again this winter due to lacking natural gas infrastructure, the North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC) said on Wednesday.

In its 2023-24 winter outlook, the regulatory authority warned that prolonged, wide-area cold snaps threaten the reliability of bulk power generation and availability of fuel supplies for natural gas-fired generation. “Recent extreme cold weather events have shown that energy delivery disruptions can have devastating consequences for electric and gas consumers in impacted areas,” NERC said

5 Zitems to Remember for When Disaster Strikes
American Thinker ^ | 8 Nov, 2023 | Michael Devon
Posted on 11/8/2023, 7:41:07 AM by MtnClimber

We all know about gold and guns. But here are some important provisions that might not occur to most people.

Our national descent into the hellish landscape of climate hysteria, virulent Jew-hatred in the streets, and Marxist-Leninist despotism continues unabated. Due to runaway inflation and the massive federal debt, the dollar’s value has shrunk like a cheap cotton towel washed in hot water. Weekly grocery bills and energy costs have almost doubled since 2021, while real wage growth has declined due to the economic strangulation of progressive bureaucratic regulation and nonexistent congressional oversight.

Combine this bleak economic outlook with our Obama-approved, hate-America-first, failed foreign policy, and you have the likely possibility of a severe economic depression during a time of multiple foreign military engagements. (Stolen elections have predicable consequences!)

How do you prepare for such an awful confluence of events? By accepting and acting upon the real possibility of food, water, energy, and medical supplies shortages in the months ahead. There are plenty of articles, videos, and social media posts that deal with the basics of prepping. Today, I’m suggesting acquiring overlooked items that may greatly aid in the rough times ahead.

Here are some odds&ends from prior topics:
- a comparison of canner lid prices
-keeping a canner clean (includes the All-American)

_____________________________________Canning Lid Prices

Here is a comparison of prices for Tattler Reusable Lids and a high quality disposable lid.

Tattlers wide mouth 1 dozen $1 each, 100 $.87 each https://www.reusablecanninglids.com/search?q=wide
rings about $.30 each

Ball Lids. 1 dozen $.50 each Tractor Supply or Amazon buying 6 (cheapest I could find)
https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/search/wide%20mouth%20lids
https://www.amazon.com/Ball-Jars-Wide-Mouth-Count/dp/B07P9MTFQ2/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2HLTPBJ3T38O3&keywords=ball+wide+mouth+lids&qid=1699504021&sprefix=ball+wide%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-7

With Tattlers, you’d easily get 2 uses out of each lid and rubber ring, so I’d consider it a better deal.

Tattler now makes a disposable lid, still using the rubber rings, so let’s look at those prices-
Tattler disposables with rings $.41-.45 each. You’d throw away the lid but keep the ring to use again. Although the price of the disposables without the ring is hardly much less so that wouldn’t be cost effective. I would use them with the original lid. And this is slightly cheaper than the ball lids. But with the idiot-proof (I’m talking about me -not you!) nature of the Ball or Kerr Lids, I’d stick with those.

There are lots of cheaper one-unit lids, sometimes sold in bulk. If anybody has any input on those, I would love to hear it. I’ve been afraid to try them.

_________________Keeping an All-American Canner Clean______________________

I called all american to see if I can use vinegar in the canning water.

The lady said it was fine to use vinegar. I told her how in my Presto it was even in the directions. She said the vinegar doesn’t cause pitting, what does is leaving water in the canner. So always make sure it is very dry when you store it.

I didn’t ask her about cream of tartar for cleaning it but that’s what the Presto said to do, and it worked extremely well. Now I have to because I ran my test and got all this ugly water mark stuff.

The AA canner pdf does say you can add vinegar or cream of tartar to clean, but it references miniscule amounts. if anybody has experience with this, I’d love to hear that also

I used cream of tartar in the Presto to clean it the few times I forgot the vinegar. I tried to remember the vinegar cuz it is so much cheaper than cream of tartar! Especially the amount needed. I used 1 Tablespoon per quart water, which ended up being 6 T in 6 quarts to get above the water line. I put the weighted gauge on 10 lb, then when it got there, turn off the canner for 2-3 hours. Looks tons better.....but not pristine like the Presto got.

oh well. I got the lid to close the first time, so it was a win-win.

Why was the lid not fitting? I have a Presto that doesn’t want to close correctly so have to mess with it and usually just use the other same Presto’s lid. I think one of the posts is bent. Both were second hand.

The first time the lid didn’t fit, I didn’t clean off whatever was on there from the factory. then I didn’t get the lubrication right the next time.

without a seal, it has to be placed and tightened on just right. I think I accidentally had it work today!

“Made some vanilla extract with vanilla beans and vodka for the first time today. Hope it works.”

neat, I’ve always wanted to do that. and vanilla is so expensive now.

so how did you make it and how long does it need before you can use it?

Had to order the beans through Walmart but got 11 for the price of two at another store. I was going to use 1 1/2 beans per 12 oz of 80 proof vodka but had sealed the package so only used 1 per bottle. Had a couple of Asian oyster sauce bottles saved and the lids are coated so we’ll see. Internet recipes can’t decide on the number of beans nor how long before you can use it. I figure in a couple months it’ll look brown enough, maybe. But, yeah, I’m almost out of the store bought extract and store bought is $$$$ so hope this works.

You’re not supposed to freeze beans so don’t know what to do with the excess. The neighbor will get one of the bottles if it works enough between now and then. Supposedly, you can add vodka as you use the extract so that’s good to know. I don’t use sugar much but might put a couple beans in a quart jar of sugar.

very interesting. I wonder if the alcohol flavor stays... but I guess that’s why you use vodka, almost flavorless.

I’ve made vanilla sugar before - it smells so good! it’s used in a lot of German baking
