Ron DeSantis is the better man. But the nomination now belongs to Donald Trump
09/08/2023 | Drew68

Posted on 09/08/2023 9:20:57 PM PDT by Drew68

It is highly unlikely that Governor DeSantis will win the GOP nomination. The recent Wall Street Journal poll has cemented this into my head.

Yet, I'm sticking with DeSantis until he's out of the race, whether that be on Election Day (unlikely) or he ends his campaign during the primaries (as of now, quite likely).

I'm sticking with him because nobody else has the record of conservative accomplishments and stalwart executive leadership that he has repeatedly demonstrated. I look for action, not words.

This being said, Governor DeSantis has showed himself to be poor campaigner. He just can't close the deal. And as much as I enjoyed the victories, I think his "war on woke" has hurt him.

The best chance he has now is to pivot to economic issues, which are Trump's strong points (at least for the first three years of his administration). But Florida has a booming economy as well, with a record $22 billion surplus last year.

This pivot will be a long shot and is unlikely to be successful because he would be going up against President Trump's strongest attributes.

This will be an election on the economy and when gas prices at the pump exceed $6-7/gallon next year (and I believe they will), Trump will remind us all that we were paying under $2/gallon for much of his first term. This is going to be a big selling point. If Trump screwed up everything in 2020, he had a booming economy with plenty of jobs and low interest rates prior to that. This can't be denied.

I am resigning myself to the reality that the primaries are essentially over and Trump will be the GOP nominee. And if he is, I will vote for Trump because at the end of the day, Trump is better than Biden. Hell, Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, Tim Scott, and Vivek Ramaswamy are better than Biden!

It's a shame though. GOP primary voters would rather be led by a cult of personality than a true executive leader with a record of accomplishments. It is what it is though.

I hope Trump can pull it off. His victory will depend on Biden voters staying home.

I hope that Trump can learn from his many mistakes and not repeat them.

I hope Trump can reconcile his disastrous record on COVID.

I hope that Trump can beat back against the myriad of unjust charges that he is currently facing.

Still, Ron DeSantis is the leader that Trump tries to be and that's the truth.

And when he keeps bashing DeSantis with lies, it only shows Trump as the sad, little man that he has become. He should as of now, stop being be this sad, little man.

I hope Trump can rise above this. As of now, he will earn my vote, but he needs to become a better man.

He has no one to blame but himself. I’ve said it before, running against Trump for the nomination at this time was the most politically bone headed move in modern American political history.

Saying it doesn’t mean I hate the man, it’s simply an observation. There’s no way anyone other than Trump is going to win at this point.

Desantis is the better husband. But Melania is the better wife.

The claim of “better man” needs definition - just like what does “good” mean?

IMHO - I liked him but now question him and his judgement, along with whom is influencing him. I no longer believe we have effective ‘representation’. We have ‘taxation without representation’ (which can only have the same result as last time). It shows very poor judgement to even think he could pass PDJT. He seems to have the establishment behind him, which really bothers me - it’s a huge red flag.

...similar for all the other candidates too. It’s “Trump or the status quo”...which isn’t tenable.

It surprised me just how poor a campaigner Ron is. The truth is he’s just not right for this election. If he had waited, things might have been different. But it’s impossible for anyone to really compete against Trump. Even those who are Trump like in many ways such as Vivek.

Does being a poor campaigner mean you’ll be a poor President?

I think that the 4 indictments have won Trump an impenetrable sympathy vote among Republican voters. In my opinion that is bad judgement by those voters, and we all will pay a heavy price for it.

I agree. Alvin Bragg and Fani Willis essentially made Trump the GOP nominee and I'm still of the opinion that 2024 will ultimately turn out to be a catastrophe, even if Trump is currently beating Biden in the polling.

The first day he will be a lame duck since he can’t run again. And unless he gets the congress, he will rule with EOs.

EOs are promptly overturned by the next opposing party POTUS. When a POTUS can't negotiate and work with Congress, executive orders are ruling by fiat.

I am happy to support him, a fellow veteran.

As am I, and I hope I'm proven dead wrong on everything I posted here.

I reviewed the evidence presented at the Carroll trial, and in spite of the fact that Judge Kaplan was appointed by Bill Clinton, I think the decision of the jury was correct. Multiple women testified against Trump, and during the discovery process Trump damaged his case by identifying a picture of Carroll as his second wife Marla. In my opinion Trump is lucky it was a civil case and, unlike Danny Masterson, he only lost money.

Trump did a great job in foreign policy, and undoubtedly deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for the Abraham accords. In fact, they really should rename the prize after Trump. Trump also did a very fine job on the economy for three years before embracing Fauci lockdowns and mail-in ballots. But the truth doesn’t change just because it is politically inconvenient. The Rats think the truth is subservient to their crackpot ideology; and I’m sorry to see many Republicans embracing the same disreputable thinking. Unfortunately those are the times we live in.

where is the sales tax reduction?

Florida has had multiple sales tax holidays all year long. 2023 had been best year for FL sales tax holidays in history.

But now that DeSantis is in the race, and the voting for just the first state doesn’t even start for several more months, no way am I giving in at this point.

My tagline stays until DeSantis himself says the race is over and as I said upthread, I hope I'm proven dead wrong on all of this.

OK. We all have opinions. Yours is troublesome because if people can be found guilty with no evidence because other rapacious women have sought a payday with lies this is not America.

Will Trump be able to sustain his narcissistic martyrdom schtick

Gee, I wonder why DeSantis advocates haven't stemmed the hemorrhaging of his political support.

I won’t support DeSantis either way simply because he’s a veteran.

Many in the military make fun of REMF’s.

Sgt. Bilko was a veteran. Colonel Klink was a veteran. Al Gore was a veteran

Only one woman got a payday in the Carroll trial. The other women who testified against Trump during that trial did it for free. And in my opinion the jury rendered a rational verdict based on all the testimony in the trial.

It seems to me that Trump supporters err by over-generalization. They assume that since Trump did a very good job as President(before the lockdowns) he must be a good man in all respects.

Did that person lose in 20, or did someone else “win”?

I believe there was election fraud because Trump allowed it to happen when he signed Pelosi's CARES Act that had millions of untracked mail-in ballots sent out, but I also believe that Trump himself turned off swaths of independent and swing voters with his behavior and that these voters went for Biden who, at the time, represented a return to normality.

Can he win these voters back, particularly in the swing states that he needs to flip?

I'm not confident of this, particularly after the debacle of the 2022 midterms.

However, I also believe that Biden has been a total disaster and inflation will only go up between now and Election Day. This may force millions of these swing voters to hold their noses and vote for Trump.

Can Trump and his supports get a handle on voter fraud? Will Trump be able to fight the multitude of lawsuits not only now but that will undoubtedly be filed should he win on Election Day?

I've said before that Trump has zero path to the White House but I'll now say that Trump has a "not zero" path to the White House.

Desantis has done a formidable job in Florida.

While I was stuck at home in lockdown florida was open , that alone says a lot about his character

He may not be as charismatic as Obama but he damn sure is smart and strong

Even my liberal friends are impressed with how well spoken desantis is

We as republicans fail to see his potential

I like what he says. I like what he does.

Past presidents, including trump said alot but never delivered

He promised that Mexico would pay for the wall but wall is non existent
He promised Hillary in jail. She still free
He promised to drain the swamp but the swamp bigger then ever

I want to see what desantis has to offer. Especially his strong force stance against Mexican cartels.

The checks on your pants are showing. If DeSantis has a twenty-two billion dollar surplus, where is the sales tax reduction?
