Among patients with knee pain, those who take a widely used class of blood pressure-lowering medications called beta-blockers appear to have a lower risk of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for the treatment of advanced osteoarthritis (OA), suggests a study.
"Our results indicate that the use of β-blockers, especially nonselective blockers, was associated with a lower likelihood of TKA," according to the case-control study by Iskandar Tamimi, MD, Ph.D. and colleagues. Beta-blockers may slow the progression of OA by reducing inflammatory mediators involved in cartilage degeneration—which may provide clues to the development of new treatment approaches for OA.
Researchers identified 300 patients who were evaluated for knee pain. These case patients were matched for age, sex, calendar year, and grade of arthritis to 300 controls.
Beta-blocker treatment was evaluated for possible effects on the risk of undergoing TKA.
In the adjusted analysis, patients with any use of beta-blockers were about half as likely to undergo TKA. The association was specific to non-selective beta-blockers, which target both beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors. For patients with knee pain taking these medications, the risk of undergoing TKA was reduced by 54%. In contrast, patients taking selective beta-blockers—which target beta-1 receptors located mainly in the heart—had no significant reduction in TKA risk.
The protective effect was even stronger with prolonged use of beta-blockers: Patients taking beta-blockers for five years or longer had a 64% reduction in TKA risk. The association was also stronger for patients with greater adherence, with a filled prescription on at least 75% of days.
Previous studies have suggested that beta-blockers downregulate various inflammatory mediators involved in OA.
The researchers write note that their study cannot draw any conclusions regarding the "true causal link" between beta-blocker treatment and the risk of undergoing TKA.

Wish I had known this before I was bone on bone.
Have you tried boron?
my arthritis in my knees is terrible. I have taken atenalol for 25 years to stablize my heart beat.. not for BP...very low dose.
I am too old for Knee replacement... will be 82 soon.
boron?
Ugh! Bless your heart. My mom is. So painful.
I may add that I have indestructible knees. I think it's genetic. If you strike my knee with your elbow, and my wife has by accident, your elbow will be in serious pain while I will feel almost nothing. I'm not complaining.
I will never take blood pressure or cholesterol drugs. Ever.

My mom had hip surgery older than that. She recovered just fine.

Ten years ago, my knees were so shot I could barely walk 500 metres. A doctor here in Jakarta recommended an operation in which he would install an artificial knee (?), cost around USD5000, and lots of therapy.
A friend suggested Glucosamine Hydrochloride with MSM and Chondroitin. I took 2 X 1500mg per day, and within three months I was rambling all over town, carrying my grandson. I continued taking 1500mg/day for several years, and now only take 1500mg two times per week. I have had no knee problems since, and the (above) concoction is very inexpensive.
I take Glucosamine with MSM and Chondroitin but it doesn’t really do anything. Hydrochloride is a diuretic, isn’t it? What brand do you use?
No. I have been on Diclofenac but decided to get off it because of the stroke/heart side effects. I bought some Curcumin then my doc put me on Duloxetine because I was having other problems with the leg. The pharmacist said it could take 2 weeks to work - so far nothing. Because I’m taking this, I had to get off the Curcumin. I’m sick of the pain.
Well, I take 4 BP pills a day. But none you listed.
A friend in America sends me the KIRKLAND brand, and I also used some from Australia that I no longer remember the name of.
.
Thanks.
I ordered this from Walmart because it was cheaper and the reviews were great.

Boron greatly reduces osteoarthritis issues, including pain and stiffness.
I was dx’d with meniscal tear and a bakers cyst. During the couple of months from the initial PCP visit to specialist referral to MRI to consult following MRI where the ortho recommended surgery, I took undenatured type ii collagen which completely healed my knee. It felt great to decline the surgery.
Maybe you have heard about the results of “placebo knee replacement” surgery? For real!
I mean, they do the whole schtick in an operating suite, put patient to sleep, recovery room, follow-up visits. BUT - they did not do a surgery.
Studies seem to indicate that ACTUAL knee replacement/s are no more helpful than placebo. Unless you are a doctor who has to make a boat payment.
