German energy giant RWE has begun dismantling a wind farm to make way for a further expansion of an open-pit lignite coal mine in the western region of North Rhine Westphalia.
One wind turbine has already been dismantled, with a further seven scheduled for removal to excavate an additional 15m to 20m tonnes of so-called ‘brown’ coal, the most polluting energy source.
The demolitions are part of a deal brokered last year between Robert Habeck, the Green Party’s minister for economy and climate action and Mona Neubaur, who is the economy minister for North Rhine Westphalia, to allow the expansion of the mine.
In return, RWE had to agree to phase out coal in 2030, eight years before the previous deadline. “It’s a good day for climate protection,” Habeck said at the time.
But this week’s move has sparked sharp criticism from activists.
“The current climate emergency requires urgent and concerted efforts to accelerate the deployment of every single wind turbine, solar panel and heat pump that we can muster,” said Fabian Hübner, a senior campaigner at Beyond Fossil Fuels, a German-based coalition of climate activists.
“Anything that diverts from this critical endeavor, especially the dismantling of renewable energy sources to extract more fossil fuels, must be unequivocally prohibited,” he added. […]
According to RWE, the expansion is necessary “due to the energy crisis.” The government in Berlin follows this logic. Indeed, some of the leading advocates of RWE’s coal expansion plans come from the Green Party, one of three ruling parties in Germany’s current ‘traffic light’ coalition with center-left SPD and business-friendly FPD-party.
Habeck has defended the expansion as the “right decision.” Green party politician Oliver Krischer has described the expansion and earlier phase-out as “one of the greatest advances we’ve made in recent years.” …

I can’t do it but somebody please queue Nelson: HA! , HA !
The only concern the envirowackos have is with carbon “release”, and so-called brown coal has the highest. Sulfur emission can be controlled far easier.
The shutdown of nuke plants happened under Merkel; she and her government fearmongered over what happened to the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan despite the low likelihood of such a thing occurring in Germany.
Tie her to a wind vane and let her spin.

“Greta’s going into hyperspace over this.”
No she isn’t. She is part of the performative “protests” over this.
Germany shut three nuclear plants, and the coal plants are being expanded. Including this mine.
And there is another mine at where they are expropriating and demolishing the whole village of Lutzerath for a new coal mine.
What this shows is that all this climate BULLSHIT is all about political power.
They don’t care about CO2. They don’t even care about air pollution.
They want coal mines and coal powered plants so they can endlessly protest against them. When there is a dispute, there is an opportiunity for political power, and that is what they are motivated by.
Doing away with fossil fuels is like inviting an early Apocalypse.
German (West German tech) coal plants have the scrubbers and etc that US coal plants do, and that East German (commie, 1920s tech) coal plants didn’t.
Your observations are of historical relevance only.
Those windmills wear out in a few years. The coal mines have been going a few thousand years and are still not wearing out. Seems God’s plan out-lasts pinheads plans.
Lol, you can’t make this stuff up.
Kohl?
If only the United States hadn’t blown up the pipeline between Germany and Russia.
There’s one that remains very much in operation.
Anyone got a slow mo video of a Bald Eagle getting smacked by one of those blades.
Tip speeds on windy days can reach 150 mph.
That would be nice to show on a digital billboard in Wokeville, USA

Hope you are doing well.

Yeah, I don’t know why I typed “two.”

But nobody has demonstrated how transmutation of Th-232 into U-233 is economically viable or even “safer”, particularly with U-232 contamination still being a problem with its high gamma ray output.
