The future should lie with thorium based nuclear power. It is much safer than the common nuclear power because thorium is a much safer material to handle and produces the uranium-233 that produces the power only as needed. The problem with the system was that it didn't produce the material needed for atomic bombs during the Cold War.

But nobody has demonstrated how transmutation of Th-232 into U-233 is economically viable or even “safer”, particularly with U-232 contamination still being a problem with its high gamma ray output.
