Pope Francis has blasted the “backwardness” of some conservatives in the U.S. Catholic Church, saying they have replaced faith with ideology and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time.
Francis’ comments were an acknowledgment of the divisions in the U.S. Catholic Church, which has been split between progressives and conservatives who long found support in the doctrinaire papacies of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, particularly on issues of abortion and same-sex marriage.
Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried Catholics receive the sacraments.
Francis made the comments in a private meeting with Portuguese members of his Jesuit religious order while visiting Lisbon on Aug. 5; the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, which is vetted by the Vatican secretariat of state, published a transcript of the encounter Monday. During the meeting, a Portuguese Jesuit told Francis that he had suffered during a recent sabbatical year in the United States because he came across many Catholics, including some U.S. bishops, who criticized Francis’ 10-year papacy as well as today’s Jesuits. …

There’s a difference between gradual and reasonable development of doctrine, and wholesale dismantling of Church teaching on faith and morals.

Bergoglio's use of the word "backward," "evolution," and "reactionary" reveal his thinking. Whether he admits to be a Marxist or not, it doesn't matter - he's got the quintessential Marxist, post-modern thinking of Marxist teleology and historical materialism - that culture, history and society are scientifically moving to some pre-destined moral, political, historical destination.

Jesus told Peter that His Church would prevail over hell. Jesus made Peter the first leader of His Church and the Vatican is where Peter is buried. Popes come and go and the Church has had bad ones like Francis. But never has the Church as a whole allowed sacrilege to go on for long and the Church has always survived bad popes and bad leaders. But Francis is extraordinarily bad and saying more and more heretical things and promoting heretics into positions pf power. If Jesus is allowing this now it can only mean He is allowing the apostasy because He is separating the sheep from the goats, the wheat from the chaff, and is about to call the truly faithful home for the wedding feast and let the tribulation hour begin the 7 years foretold and shown to the apostle John.

Really? Who is trying to change Church teaching to comport with modern sensibilities? Who is trying go along with the world rather than live for our communion with God? Who expounds more on Climate Change than salvation these days? Who keeps hiring those who stand at odds with fundamental truths of the Church? Whose ideology coddles those who abuse children rather than dealing with them as harshly as they deserve? Who covers up scandal with lies rather than allowing the truth to heal?
