Weekly Garden Thread - August 19-25, 2023 [National Potato Day Edition]
August 19, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 08/19/2023 5:24:58 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Sign at the liquor/ammo/bait store says; If life gives you lemons, grab the tequila and salt.

Mashed potatoes, with a can of cream-of-chicken soup for gravy, is my favorite comfort food. If you can’t boil a potato for mashing, bake one in the microwave and smoosh it with a fork. Add milk, butter, and salt, then smoosh it some more. Single-serving mashed potatoes, in less time than it would take to boil water!

Love hassleback potatoes. I have been dehydrating San Marzano tomatoes, blanching and freezing anything green like broccoli and the Chinese long beans. I am up to a 10 gallon estimate now on shishito peppers. Diana I will never grow borage again.

Not potatoes exactly, but a few weeks ago, my Sis noticed that her grocery-store sweet potatoes all started sprouting “eyes”, like regular potatoes do. These aren’t any fancy organic brand, either. Never saw anything like it before.

She now tells me that the sprouted sweet potatoes, which she had cut in half and put in Mason jars of water, are growing ROOTS like there’s no tomorrow. She’s itching to put ‘em in the ground, but I suggested large pots might be better, so as to be able to move them into her garage if it gets cold early this year.

Sis has not just a green thumb, but entire green hands. Wish I’d inherited whatever gift she has . . . growing anything is a total crap-shoot for me. Heh.

46% - Nearly half of all people surveyed pick Lay’s as their go-to bag of potato chips.

They're OK; but here in the East we love us some UTZ's — Original, rippled, flavored, or Grandma Utz's cooked in lard!

Zone 6B over here on the KS Missouri Border.

Currently 97. The highs between here and Thursday are all around 102F Not much difference with Texas and California although Death Valley might get some rain soon! Summers are more fun up north where Diana is!

I did a deep watering in the garden today and my containers with Potatoes were moved into the shade of the Tomatoes

Wow that sounds good. I have so many put up in the freezer lime usual. And I started taking all the red ones, and pickling them with some banana peppers. So I have been wondering what to do with the rest. Think I will get a few gallons more. This recipe sounds perfect. Might try it as a pizza sauce too. Thank you, thank you. Might be able to freeze small amounts and add the cream after thawing. Have been eating some literally every day.

I ❤️ Potatoes

👀 ❤️ 🥔

Favorite potato dish is German Potato Salad ( bacon, onions, dried dill, salt, sugar, apple cider vinegar and .... potatoes!). Served hot. Old family recipe. Yummy.

Just made some Friday night.

I LOVE the scent of Plumeria. :) You’ll have plenty of figs. Maybe your helpers could pick them for you? ;)

Few are escaping the heat this week. By Thursday they are predicting 100 degree temps up here! That hasn’t happened since 2012.
