A few weeks ago, I had the displeasure of watching a black rat snake first constrict an unfortunate chipmunk, then swallow its dying body. It was like watching a train wreck. I averted my eyes once, then turned back to figure out what animal it had, walked away, then came back minutes later to see if it had finished the job. It was right near my car (door), which I was in the middle of loading. I didn’t want it to get very close to me, so I had to keep my eyes out for whatever movement was going on. I was happy to be finished with my task. I hate snakes. Even baby ones. Even non-poisonous ones. They’re all gross to me.

Sounds like a “Poof bird”. When they get excited, they fly in ever-decreasing circles until they disappear up their own anus.

My wife acquired a western hognose snake on Monday. They are slightly venomous with rear fangs. The snake readily ate 2 small mice when placed in the new enclosure. Tuesday, my wife was feeding the other snakes with small mice. Her hands smelled like mouse. When she reached in to handle the hognose, it latched onto the middle knuckle of her left pinky finger. A moment later, it dragged her knuckle deep enough to apply the fangs. She let out a yelp and moments later had the presence of mind to push the snake's head under water. It let go. She had a painful puncture on her knuckle and the venom caused her hand to swell over a period of hours. It is now Thursday and most of the swelling has subsided. She took 2 Benedryl immediately after cleaning the bite and put hydro-cortisone cream on the bite/joint. Venomous snake bites are classed as "dangerous" if loss of life is a possibility. Western hognose venom isn't "dangerous", but it is not "harmless" either.
