A few weeks ago, I had the displeasure of watching a black rat snake first constrict an unfortunate chipmunk, then swallow its dying body. It was like watching a train wreck. I averted my eyes once, then turned back to figure out what animal it had, walked away, then came back minutes later to see if it had finished the job. It was right near my car (door), which I was in the middle of loading. I didn’t want it to get very close to me, so I had to keep my eyes out for whatever movement was going on. I was happy to be finished with my task. I hate snakes. Even baby ones. Even non-poisonous ones. They’re all gross to me.

Takeaway: Snakes aren’t particularly smart.

Circle of life. And a chipmunk is just a tree rat.

Sounds like a “Poof bird”. When they get excited, they fly in ever-decreasing circles until they disappear up their own anus.

Chipmunks may be cute, but they are VERY destructive. Won’t miss one, two, or ten around here.

My wife acquired a western hognose snake on Monday. They are slightly venomous with rear fangs. The snake readily ate 2 small mice when placed in the new enclosure. Tuesday, my wife was feeding the other snakes with small mice. Her hands smelled like mouse. When she reached in to handle the hognose, it latched onto the middle knuckle of her left pinky finger. A moment later, it dragged her knuckle deep enough to apply the fangs. She let out a yelp and moments later had the presence of mind to push the snake's head under water. It let go. She had a painful puncture on her knuckle and the venom caused her hand to swell over a period of hours. It is now Thursday and most of the swelling has subsided. She took 2 Benedryl immediately after cleaning the bite and put hydro-cortisone cream on the bite/joint. Venomous snake bites are classed as "dangerous" if loss of life is a possibility. Western hognose venom isn't "dangerous", but it is not "harmless" either.

Sure they are! A boa or python will just hug you to death!...................A Burmese python has a good set of teeth. My wife dangled a mouse in to feed the Burmese python and it latched onto the joint at the base of her right thumb. I had to lift the snake out of the terrarium and carefully disengage the backward pointing teeth. A U shaped set of pin-point punctures remained. Easily cleaned. We found a new home for "monty" the next week.

They’re fairly disgusting. They fight, and can have some pretty large abscesses. I’ve also found large botfly larvae on them.
