State of emergency declared after huge fire and chemical leak at oil refinery
EXCERPT:
A state of emergency has been declared after a naptha leak and oil fire caused havoc in Louisiana.
Residents within a two-mile radius of the Marathon Petroleum oil refinery in Garyville are being ordered to evacuate as a precautionary measure.
As of 12.51pm EDT, the fire was reduced to half the initial size. Foam and water were dumped onto the flames.
Marathon will now shut down its Garyvillle refinery, the third largest in the US.
Today’s incident marks the third fire to hit the plant in less than a year.
St. John the Baptist Parish officials said shelters are open, but residents are asked to bring medications and other items they need.
A Marathon Petroleum spokesperson said that the release and fire were self-contained on company property and that there were no injuries.
Air monitoring has been deployed as a precaution, the company says.
In Marathon’s full statement, they said: “Marathon Petroleum personnel and local emergency responders are currently responding to a naphtha release and fire at a storage tank at the company’s Garyville, Louisiana, refinery.
“The release and fire are contained within the refinery’s property and there have been no injuries. As a precaution, air monitoring has been deployed in the community. No off-site impacts have been detected.
“All regulatory notifications have been made. As always, our main priority is to ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, our neighbors within our surrounding community, first responders, and to limit environmental impact.
“An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the release.”
According to the New Jersey Dept. of Health, a state with a large chemical plant industry, naphtha is a term to describe a class of hydrocarbon mixtures obtained from distilling petroleum.
It can be breathed in or passed through the skin and cause headaches, nausea, and vomiting.
St. John officials say that a shelter is open at East St. John Preparatory Academy Gym on 400 Ory Drive in LaPlace and at West St. John High School at 480 Highway 3127.
