VERY FISHY People are only just realising what crab sticks are made from and say they’ll never eat them again Chloe Morgan

CRABSTICKS are adored by seafood lovers across the nation, but people have vowed never to eat them again after learning what they're actually made from.

A social media user shared a video of the process on Reddit, which shows how a Thailand-based factory creates the fishy sticks.

And many have been left horrified by the reality - with people branding them "fish hot dogs."

The savoury snack begins its journey as a grey slab of frozen fish meat, before making its way into a machine where it's crushed.

Next, it moves onto a second machine where other ingredients are added - including salt and egg white.

The fishy mix is then blended with several ice cubes, before factory workers add vegetable oil and sugars.

It's then placed through a tube which turns it into a slimy grey paste, before being rolled into a rectangle strip.

At this point, it's encased in the orange coating that were's all familiar with.

And for anyone wondering, the distinctive coating is naturally pigmented surimi - a paste made from fish or other meat.

Finally, the crabsticks are wrapped in plastic and frozen, before being boxed up by employees and finding their way onto supermarket shelves.

The video, which was allegedly taken from inside the world's largest crabstick factory, was flooded with comments from horrified social media users.

"Hot dogs of the sea," wrote one.

A second penned: "The only ingredient I could identify was the ice."

A third quipped: "Everything ok hun? You've hardly touched your grey" due to the colour of the original paste."

Too many emotionally-driven people don’t know where their food comes from.

So the ingredients are

fish
salt
egg whites
ice
sugars
natural fish-based coloring

That’s it? Sounds pretty good actually

There's an old expression along the lines of not wanting to see how the sausage is made. For once you do, you might never eat another sausage again.

This maxim applies to any mass-produced food. When you think of it, this is how supermarket and fast food chains create products that are consistent in appearance, taste, and cost, across a national market. Thus quality is sacrificed and unhealthy ingredients are often brought into the mix to create the desired product.

Your only way out of this is to carefully select all the foods you eat and source them as close to the source as possible.

For example, I cruise the roadside farm stands in my area, picking up not only seasonal produce but farm raised eggs and milk products as well. When I'm in the mood for shellfish, I go to the coastline and purchase it practically right from the boats.

If you live in the middle of the country away from the coast, a good option for sea water fish is to buy it flash frozen (and ensure its wild caught and not farm raised).

Farm raised meats are good. Farm raised fish is bad!

It's much more expensive eating this way but the way I look at it, I will never cut costs when it comes to what goes into my body.

Right on the front of the package it says “IMITATION CRAB”.

Yes, it does. Next should be the big reveal about Calamari.

Pig rectum slices, not even seafood. Also known as Bung….

Mass stupidity is now rampant.

That's because stupidity is no longer fatal. The stupids now survive stupidity and breed at a faster pace than the rest of us.

I use those Niboshi (煮干し), from the Asian mart, little dried fish for stock. Makes a good stock, fish sauce from Thailand (Trang province) is hearty, Vietnam fish sauce is good too, but I know the Trang province from my youth.

I’ve been making chili oil too. Not as filtered as the store bought but pretty good. Tabasco is about the scofield limit these days. The next pep down is cayenne.
