5 aboard lost Titanic sub could survive for 'hours' after airtank depleted: Doctor..."The actual amount of time they have is unpredictable," said Dr. Richard Moon.

Despite their onboard oxygen tank expected to be depleted sometime Thursday morning, one doctor says they may have more time if the passengers are still alive. He estimates the five people aboard the lost Titanic tourist sub could survive for 10 to 20 hours with air still circulating through the experimental capsule.

Dr. Richard Moon, a professor of anesthesiology at Duke University, said that despite conditions being dire, those aboard the OceanGate Expedition's submersible could extend the oxygen available after its tank is depleted by staying calm and moving as little as possible.

"The actual amount of time that they have is unpredictable, but it's probably less than 24 hours after the final oxygen in the tank is depleted," Moon, director of the Duke Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology, told ABC News.

The Titan submersible had 96 hours of oxygen when it set off on its journey to the Titanic wreckage around 8 a.m. on Sunday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The sub pilot, OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, lost contact with its companion surface ship an hour and 45 minutes into the trip and hasn't been heard from since, setting off a desperate search off the coast of Newfoundland.

Coast Guard officials said the minivan-sized vessel's air tank is expected to be depleted sometime Thursday morning.

"When you have an enclosed vessel, such as the Titan, everybody is using oxygen, everybody is producing carbon dioxide, which is scrubbed from the environment by carbon dioxide absorbent materials," Moon said. "So, there would be an electric fan that would be blowing the air through a carbon dioxide absorber and I don't know what the lifespan of that would be. It would be at least as long as the oxygen will last, but it may be longer"...

This is a media induced circus. Prayers these people somehow survive but the hyperventilating countdown to oxygen running out to increase eyeballs now quickly changes to hours more before it is fully depleted just to buy more clicks and views. Ridiculous.

I’m talking about an Airplane style Beacon that operates independently
from Sub power, can withstand the depths and is encased in something
that withstand the pressures of that depth. Whatever it had onboard was not
an Airplane style Beacon.

That alone was certainly highly suggestive of a catastrophic implosion event from hull failure. RIP

Coast Guard is going to do a press conference at 3pm to talk about the debris field.

It may never be known now.

This vessel was so poorly designed it was a disaster waiting to happen.

No back-ups on any systems, no possible rescues, and no adult supervision....................

You're correct, we exhale carbon dioxide. We don't exhale carbon monoxide; that's a product of incomplete combustion, like your dirty old car or gas stove or water heater.

Our bodies are very sensitive to external and internal levels of O2 and CO2. Cellular respiration and the production of CO2 is a pretty interesting topic.

No old white Engineer’s supervision is a key indicator of cheap CEO
mentality. Your statement is true.

This reminds me of the various crime shows where the victim is trapped with a limited air supply and the rescuers know to the minute when the victim will run out and die. Nope. Oxygen usage depends on metabolism so you will use less if you fall asleep rather than panicking and fighting to get out. Also death isn't instant. You will gradually use up the oxygen, pass out and then the low levels will cause brain damage and the you die. Your body can detect too high of CO2 levels which causes the panic response. If they have CO2 scrubbers working that won't happen.

I don't know how much leeway they have, but the ticking clock to running out of oxygen is ridiculous.

They are spending all this time and effort to find this thing. So, if they find it, then what?

Nothing that can go that deep is strong enough to bring it up. They can’t transfer air. They cannot “attach” and rescue anyone.

The ONLY thing they could do is send down a robot and look into the front window.

Social media actually thinks these people are making it out of this alive. It sounds like CNN after the Challenger blew up.

Because in water that deep a beacon would not transmit very far. Water is one hell of a radiation dampener.

Yes, this will be the stuff of Philosophy 101 classes for generations to come.

“The Trolley Problem” is now passe.

“Consider, what if one is trapped in a submersible with four other people, with a finite amount of oxygen...”

“They can at any time reduce their consumption of oxygen by 20%«”

Actually, no. A dead body consumes more oxygen in a closed space (until putrefaction is complete) and also produces methane and other poison gasses.

If they could kill a passenger and throw the body out it would increase supply of oxygen - but a dead body inside that thing would kill everyone else faster.
