A new exhibition at the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, Netherlands, shows how Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece, Girl with a Pearl Earring, has changed over time. Using the latest imaging technology, including a new 108-billion-pixel scan by 3D digital microscopy company Hirox, researchers were able to better understand what this work may have looked like when Vermeer first painted it around 1665.
“We found out some really exciting things about the girl,” says painting conservator Abbie Vandivere at the Mauritshuis. “For instance, that the background used to be a green curtain, and that she has eyelashes that are now no longer visible because the paints have changed over time.”
The scans also revealed that Vermeer made compositional changes during the painting process, such as the position of the ear. They also allowed researchers to trace where his pigments originated. Lead white came from the Peak District in England, cochineal (red) from insects found in Mexico and South America and ultramarine from Afghanistan.

A ‘real’ Vermeer?.................
was it determined when she took out her nose ring?
The movie ‘Girl With A Pearl Earring’ was filmed in 2003.
The star; Scarlett Johansson was made for such a role. Physically, there was a great resemblance.
Even genetically, there was a link.
Vermeer was Dutch, while Scarlett’s father Karsten Johansson is a Danish born architect from Copenhagen. A region that is culturally very similar to Vermeer’s birth place in Holland.
As any student of Fine Art would know, Vermeer was famous for the works he produced by using Egg Tempera paints.
Andrew Wyeth adopted the same technique hundreds of years later.
Stayed at a place to visit the Waterloo battlefield. The folks house was basically where the British line stood. Their daughter went to art school and their graduation picture had to be a famous piece but with their face. Their daughter painted this one and it was a great replica but with her face. Very well done.
Now I suppose they are going to tell us the girl was really a guy.
When she realized she had to "go Dutch" on all her dates?
It’s always amazing when the British win a victory that far from the ocean.
such a visually beautiful movie - so evocative of the time and period. i re-watch it from time to time.
Saw this in person, a masterpiece like no other. Vermeer was a master of light.
Yes, there was a Documentary on cable a month or so ago, hosted by Penn and Teller as to how Vermeer could paint so realistically. The ‘expert’ came up with the idea that he used a device called a ‘camera obscura’ along with a mirror to correctly match the colors of a scene or portrait.
Very interesting if you can find it on cable......
