That said, the idea of serving beer seems like trying too hard. I think it would have been better if he had sat on a bar stool with them and just shot the shit. Left his campaign staff at home.

This is called retail politics. It works in Iowa and New Hampshire. Not so much in large states, Super Tuesday states or the general election.

Trump had a few home runs of this kind. Remember his stop for a Philly steak? He made a few such stops (but didn’t overdo it). Those stops at popular eating places really connected with people.

Another thing that really worked well for Trump was the motorcades, bike rallies, and regattas. Colorful. Waving flags and Trump signs. And, smiling.

Of course, Trump’s rallies and non-stop campaigning were epic. If the pundits could be fair in assessing Trump’s strengths and weaknesses, his energy would be recognized.

Trump brings charisma to politics. We are not seeing this with DeSantis. DeSantis has a fine resume (as had Trump in 2016), and DeSantis has a more presidential personality, but DeSantis is more of a policy wonk than a celebrity.

DeSantis is a regular guy. You don’t need to be against DeSantis to be for Trump. All these anti DeSantis posts tell me Trumps supporters are afraid of this guy… and I mean really afraid. If nothing else, DeSantis will help Trump back down on his over the top rhetoric and become a more reasonable public speaker.

That’s what “Leaders” can create.

I don't think so. I've had my reservations about him for a long time, and with each passing week I think more and more people here on FR are seeing the same things I did.

One thing is for sure: It got nauseating back in 2021 when I started to see this "DeSantis Is My President" meme showing up on FR ... with an old photo of DeSantis in his military uniform. There was something bizarre -- almost homosexual -- about it.

Those memes seem to have vanished. Good riddance.
