·The ancient weapon was dug up in the small German town of Nördlingen
·Experts were shocked to find how shiny it was despite laying in a burial site
·They are unsure where the sword was made or who the people are at this grave

Archaeologists have stumbled upon an extremely rare Bronze Age sword at an ancient burial site in Germany.

The weapon, believed to be 3,000 years old, was dug up in the small town of Nördlingen just last week.

Experts were shocked it was so well preserved that it actually shined, despite laying in a grave of three people.

The three bodies included a man, woman and teenager, with researchers left puzzled over whether they were related...

While experts believe it was difficult to create, they are convinced it was a real weapon, designed for sharp cuts...

Swords from Nördlingen often belonged to the 'Urns' during this period- distinguished by their custom of cremation during the late Bronze era.

While Urnfield culture is believed to have first appeared in northern Italy and eastern-Europe, this reached various other countries...

They received their name from their distinctive bell-shaped beakers, decorated in horizontal zones by finely toothed stamps.

The decorated pots are almost ubiquitous across Europe, and could have been used as drinking vessels or ceremonious urns.

Believed to be originally from Spain, the Beaker folk soon spread into central and western Europe in their search for metals.

Textile production was also under way at the time and people wore wrap-around skirts, tunics and cloaks...

The dead were cremated or buried in small cemeteries near settlements.

This period was followed by the Iron Age which started around 650 BC and finished around 43 AD.

Cleaned up a bit from the original Ghengis Khan

The greatest happiness is to vanquish your enemies, to chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth, to see those dear to them bathed in tears, to clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters.

You’ve taken the sword. Now the bones are going to re-articulate and come after you. Like The Mummy.

In the year 2998 BC, how did the people living then know what year it was?

Nice find.

Check the metallurgy....looks like the cutting edge is different from the bulk of the center blade,

cutting edge harder but brittle for a good cut

Center of blade less tensile and not brittle

Groove lets blood flow for easy extraction.

Nördlingen is a great little town to visit. Especially during the Mauerfest every three years.

Strange women laying about ponds, watery tarts distributing swords is no basis for a system of government!

Sword, armour, arrowheads, and the dead’s remains. Reminds me of the song ‘Conquistador’, which was popular the summer after I graduated from high school (in 72).

The first few times I heard that song, I thought the singer was saying ‘Christopher’. Some other words were hard to understand. But I was listening to the fender-mounted AM radio on the John Deere 4020. And my car radio speaker was marginal as well, but I heard the dj announce the title, and then the song made more sense.

The archaeologist was amazed at the ancient swords’ overall condition and the reflective quality of the blade, in particular; “I can see myself!” he exclaimed. ‘Could there have been some primitive version of Joy Dishwashing Detergent back then?”

“The first few times I heard that song, I thought the singer was saying ‘Christopher’. Some other words were hard to understand.”

Yeah artists sometimes mess up the lyrics while singing. Usually they redo them. The middle chorus of “Tell her No” by the Zombies is an example where the producer said leave the mistake as is and make them wonder what is actually being said.

Imagine the cost of such weapons 3,000 years ago. They had to be the most valuable things owned by people and their utility was extremely high. Yet they buried these valuable weapons with the dead person probably so they would have them in the afterlife.

I’m always astonished that they couldn’t bury the dead with something decorative and of low value and keep the weapons for the town’s or the deceased relatives’ defense.

The man who owned it was what archaeologists refer to as “high status”. :^)
