One more thot on Nellies radio work: time of day, if known, can be a key to what she might be listening for?
She could well have used coded phraseology to send messages too. And the FCC isn’t everywhere, and if your broadcast doesn’t sound sketchy and if you give legit call signs, you can say a lot. As long as the intended party knows the code.
Thinking of the radio in Hogan’s Heroes - they had some code phrases for blowing up that Heidelberg bridge every other episode. :)

True enough that one doesn’t need a license to listen to short wave but she indeed is/was licensed. At some power level one needs a license to obtain the gear regardless and it always seemed to me that she might have been/ is some sort of sleeper who would only transmit when somebody tripped her decoder ring? Nellie has too many CIXA connections to rule out her possible use as a relay, backup, front, purty face, etc. And don’t forget her husband up to his eyeballs also? One can easily imagine the family lighting up the old crystal set every night after supper. I remember listening at night, back in the 50’s. I could pick up conversations halfway around the world.

DH got a HAM license but never really used it. I’m encouraging him to learn it (ie read the books he has) because in times of poor comms, or who knows what, could be very useful to have.
