Sucralose found to cause "significant health effects" affecting DNA in new study 😳

Oh no.

Sucralose, which you probably consume even if you don't know you do, has been found to damage DNA in a new study:

Sucralose, a chemical found in the popular zero-calorie sweetener Splenda, has been shown to cause damage to DNA, raise the risk of cancer and cause leaks in the gut lining, according to a new study from North Carolina State University.

Yep. For all these years you've been crushing that Diet Coke With Splenda like Quint himself...

...Turns out it might not have been such a great idea.

"Sucralose is utilized in tens of thousands of food, beverage, and pharmaceutical products worldwide," Susan Schiffman, an adjunct professor at North Carolina State University who led the study, told Newsweek. "For example, it is found in baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, gelatins, frozen dairy desserts, and pharmaceutical products."

Specifically the research found that a metabolite of sucralose, called sucralose-6-acetate, is "genotoxic," which the NIH says "is a chemical or agent that can cause DNA or chromosomal damage." This sort of thing can lead to cancer.

Sucralose was also shown to cause "leaky gut," which is precisely as awful as it sounds. And this isn't the first study to identify the risks from the chemical:

"Previous studies have shown a wide range of adverse effects from sucralose, including dysbiosis (including damage to good bacteria in the gut) and alteration of blood glucose and insulin."

Of course, one study doesn't necessarily prove anything. Researchers next week could come out saying that sucralose cures cancer and gives you wings made of gold.

But yeaaah I think I'll just opt for plain old sugar at the coffee shop next time.

I’m 71½, and I’ve been drinking iced tea sweetened with saccharine since my tweens. Never trusted nutrasweet, and have always looked askance at splenda. I don’t usually drink more than one or two large glasses a day, sometimes none at all.

Diabetes or CANCER, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, you choose. I’ll take diabetes (I did). Taking insulin and other medication along with all natural nutritional supplements.

Try Honey instead.

ZERO sugar substitutes for me. “Natural sugar” (no sugar added) or honey (two different types of sugar digested differently/separately) Made by bees (GOD)

Diet Coke is not made with Splenda. It is made with Equal.

Which makes me doubt everything about this article. It’s right on the can.

I don’t know of a diet soda that uses Splenda.

You are in for a sad reckoning if you think eating “natural” sugar and honey are healthy. Sugar is sugar whether white, brown or in the form of honey. Many of the health problems humans are suffering today are caused by diets high in carbohydrates. They range from diabetes, gout, psoriasis and cancer to old age dementia and epilepsy. Some cancers seem to feed on high starch and sugar diets.

That insulin is almost as deadly as high blood sugar. Insulin resistance or metabolic disorder can lead to heart problems and strokes. They have a name for it hyperinsulanemia.

Lou:
You gonna order something, kid?

Marty McFly:
Ah, yeah... Give me a Tab.

Lou:
Tab? I can’t give you a tab unless you order something.

Marty McFly:
Alright, give me a Pepsi Free.

Lou:
You want a Pepsi, PAL, you’re gonna pay for it.

Uh, my diet coke contains aspartame, not splenda.

I have to use it — I’m SEVERELY allergic to aspartame. I wonder if this study was paid for by the makers of aspartame.

I’ve tried stevia. I don’t like the aftertaste.

Diet Pepsi used to use sucralose, but switched to aspartame.

Diet Rite uses sucralose.

Interesting. I think the amount is critical. Use extra, get aftertaste, use too little, not sweet enough.

There is a “sweet” spot, pun intended, of no aftertaste. YMMV.

It is my understanding that Stevia is a real sugar, just not digestible, unlike the fake aspartame/sucralose/etc.

Stevia comes from a natural vegetable.
