Fallout shelters can cost millions of dollars. But this DIY underground bunker costs about $1,000.
You wouldn't want to live in this makeshift underground bunker forever.
In a pinch, this DIY fallout shelter would be better than an above-ground building, an expert said.
In the event of nuclear war, the ultra-rich can hide away in their luxury bunkers that cost anywhere from $35,000 to $14 million. But what about the rest of us?
Turns out, if a nuclear attack is imminent, you can build your own DIY fallout shelter for relatively cheap.
You would just need a couple of days' time, some equipment, and ideally a bunker-building buddy.

Loved that movie.
Very cool bomb shelter :)
No bunker is going to save anyone for long if a nuclear exchange occurs. People who die immediately will be the lucky ones. Far less agony!
Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, Russians would be prudent to plan ahead since Russia and its supporters threaten nuclear war every day including Sunday.
I loved how the Dad called every he disliked a commie.
“No bunker is going to save anyone for long if a nuclear exchange occurs.”
I pretty sure monthly covid vax boosters and being masked up will prevent any ill effects from a nuclear blast.
Paint it yellow.😁
There was a guy maybe 5 to 10 years ago that built a buried shelter like that up in the mountains near Seattle, right near a very popular hiking trail system. He built it over the years and it was fairly complex. Several hundred yards away from any trails.
He ended up killing his wife and then went to his secret hut built into the side of the hill. He left his car at the trail-head parking lot and it was noted several days later and the police searched the area.
It took them several more days to discover the place - only a pipe was visible sticking up out of the ground. I can’t recall if they had a shoot out, the guy killed himself or what.

Heh - I was right - 2012. He ended up killing himself.
When I was a kid, a neighbor somehow got on the phony quiz show “The 64,000 Dollar Question”, and he won $32,000.
He blew it on a fallout shelter in his basement. I wonder if it’s still there and if so, do the current owners know what it was?
Bob Dylan:
“Well, I will not go down under the ground
‘Cause somebody tells me that death’s comin’ ‘round
And I will not carry myself down to die
When I go to my grave, my head will be high
Let me die in my footsteps before I go down under the ground”
Painting the FL submarine bunker yellow would add precious additional time and labor to the task. Would need time to allow paint to cure. Then the paint might get scratched and marred, requiring touch-up. Meanwhile, the bright yellow submarine would be a potential target while waiting for the paint to dry. Not sure it is such a good idea.
Mass Transit - subway and train tunnels
Utility structures - buried electrical and water supply main lines
Governmental Municipal buildings - basement file rooms, research rooms, librarys, hospitals, etc.
Festivus...for the rest of us.
I stopped reading at “plastic sheeting, canvas or tarps.”
Yeah, like that’ll resist 200 million degree heat.
Build a root cellar the right way, and it can be a fallout shelter, tornado shelter, hiding spot, or even just a place to escape the heat when the AC isn’t working.
