Indy 500 fans SLAM Jewel for 'extremely disrespectful' rendition of the national anthem ahead of historic race... as viewers claim she 'ruined' moment with her twist on the classic

Fans at the Indianapolis 500 may have thought singer-songwriter Jewel's version of the national anthem was a little tone deaf.

Instead of doing a by-the-book rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner', the Alaska-raised Folk artist, 49, put together a more nuanced version of the anthem.

On a stage as big as 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing', the four-time Grammy-nominated artist put together a soulful version of the 200+ year-old song.

It was similar in style and tone to the national anthem she sang at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game in Utah, where she was born.

While it wasn't a complete departure from the notes as other versions had, nor was it a horribly sung version, some on social media objected to this rendition of the song.

She accessorized the look with a beige cowboy hat.

Jewel wore her strawberry toned tresses cascading down her shoulders in light curls.

She strummed on her dark green guitar and rearranged the entire song for a much slower and soulful rendition.

On Twitter, the version of the anthem sung generated a lot of reactions - with the general consensus being mixed.

That being said, there were plenty of Twitter users upset at the sound of the song.

She doesn’t have the voice to belt it out

Has the lungs though

God love her

She wrote a book of thin poetry for teen girls and got it perfectly right, as far as teen girls were concerned.

However, I saw a panel of professional poets agonizing and lamenting it. Mostly because she had sold more poetry books than everyone on the panel combined, times 100.

The poems themselves were written from the heart of a teen girl, Jewel being 17 at the time, and it resonated with every other teen girl out there.

Of course it was never really written as a song. It’s a poem. That some people decided to sing, borrowing the melody from a drinking song (probably more convenience than anything else, a tune people could be counted on to know). But thanks to all that the “proper traditional” way of singing would probably be half drunk waving a beer in the air.

I thought it was good. Had a soulful, longing, melancholy vibe. Fit her voice and style perfectly. Very appropriate I thought for Memorial Day. I was less excited about the Opera singer’s version of America the Beautiful. Some songs just aren’t operatic and that is one of them. Should have been sung by a Broadway style singer. Where is Kate Smith when you need her?

Only the first verse is ever sung. The fourth never.

I also like the second verse, which answers the question posed in the first verse in the affirmative, and the third verse, with its Bible reference (Job 7:2).

Sandy Patty used to do a pretty fair rendition too. But Whitney was hard to top.

Jewel per Wiki:

“Jewel Kilcher (born May 23, 1974)[2] is an American singer-songwriter, actress, and author. She has received four Grammy Award nominations and, as of 2021, has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.[3]

Jewel was raised near Homer, Alaska, where she grew up singing and yodeling as a duo with her father, Atz Kilcher, a local musician. At age fifteen, she received a partial scholarship at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she studied operatic voice. After graduating, she began writing and performing at clubs and coffeehouses in San Diego, California. Based on local media attention, she was offered a recording contract with Atlantic Records, which released her debut album, Pieces of You, in 1995; it went on to become one of the best-selling debut albums of all time, going 12-times platinum. The debut single from the album, “Who Will Save Your Soul”, peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100; two others, “You Were Meant for Me” and “Foolish Games”, reached number two on the Hot 100, and were listed on Billboard's 1997 year-end singles chart, as well as Billboard's 1998 year-end singles chart...Jewel is the daughter of Atz Kilcher, who stars in the Discovery Channel show Alaska: The Last Frontier.[117] All three of her brothers live in Alaska.[114] Her first cousin once removed is actress Q’orianka Kilcher who is best known for her role as Pocahontas opposite Colin Farrell and Christian Bale in director Terrence Malick’s Academy Award-nominated motion picture The New World (2005).[118]”

IMHO she comes from and dis-functional family. Atz clearly suffers from some disorder mental.

My favorite version. Anna sings the first and fourth verses.

I like the Accapella traditional style in the Baritone or Bass range due to hearing aids, background music changes the sound.

"Whitney Houston"

Beautiful voice, but not a lick of soul. Baffling.

It’s a Memorial Day event. They should have brought in the Marine Band and Choir. They have plenty of room for them there. Then give the whole band front row seats.

Instead the Indy 500 is just another event to take our minds off the fact that without the sacrifice of strong, brave men who gave their lives for our Liberty, there wouldn’t be an Indiana to host this event.

It’s just another distraction from the meaning of the day.
