Indy 500 fans SLAM Jewel for 'extremely disrespectful' rendition of the national anthem ahead of historic race... as viewers claim she 'ruined' moment with her twist on the classic

Fans at the Indianapolis 500 may have thought singer-songwriter Jewel's version of the national anthem was a little tone deaf.

Instead of doing a by-the-book rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner', the Alaska-raised Folk artist, 49, put together a more nuanced version of the anthem.

On a stage as big as 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing', the four-time Grammy-nominated artist put together a soulful version of the 200+ year-old song.

It was similar in style and tone to the national anthem she sang at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game in Utah, where she was born.

While it wasn't a complete departure from the notes as other versions had, nor was it a horribly sung version, some on social media objected to this rendition of the song.

She accessorized the look with a beige cowboy hat.

Jewel wore her strawberry toned tresses cascading down her shoulders in light curls.

She strummed on her dark green guitar and rearranged the entire song for a much slower and soulful rendition.

On Twitter, the version of the anthem sung generated a lot of reactions - with the general consensus being mixed.

That being said, there were plenty of Twitter users upset at the sound of the song.

I liked it. There's video out there somewhere.

I liked it, too.

The Daily Smell doesn’t like my ad blockers anymore so I can’t hear this for myself. If a utube or rumble link surfaces and you post it here please drop me a line.

"Just once before I die, I’d like to hear the national anthem sung at a public event exactly as it was written, without any “interpretation” such as yodeling the last line. I don’t expect to, though."

Meatloaf's rendition at the 1994 MLB All star game was just about perfect. It's on YouTube.

Thanks for the link. There is nothing wrong with her rendition. I’ve heard worse (a lot worse). Some here have a perpetual bug up their backsides.

Some folks eat nothing but Wonder Bread and consider whole wheat an insult and an abomination. There’s nothing to be done about it.

The only version other than the original that is worth listening to is by Dave Bray when he was with Madison Rising. Dave Bray is a former US Navy Corpsman...

Sure, every rendition of the SSB should sound exactly like one this because everyone living today can completely identify with the original 1814 rendition as originally written and sung.

Memorial Day used to be on May 30. Then in 1970 it was changed to the last Monday in May. Got to give folks a three-day weekend.

And that caused a shift in perception, as you noted.

I like LeAnn Rimes’ version of it.

You’re right. She was invited because the organizers knew about that style. So why blame her? They had countless others to select from who could have done it in a more respectful and uplifting manner.

That is perfect so I’m stealing it. 25 notes with a two octave range just on “hailed”.

So making the Star Bangled Banner into a hard rock arena style anthem is less disrespectful than the acoustic version Jewel sang?

She had her head covered, as should be for a women, honoring those, at this solemn moment

Ended with the 49th USAF Wing flyover.

Well done

I was at the ballpark in 68 to hear Jose Feliciano’s rendition. I think that was the first time anyone varied it. There were cheers and boos.
