The alarming link between schizophrenia and marijuana
The Washington Examiner ^ | May 17, 2023 | Washington Examiner

The more marijuana is consumed, the more evidence mounts up that it ruins lives.

As more states legalize marijuana, and as popular culture increasingly treats the narcotic as though it were harmless, it becomes increasingly apparent that using it involves serious risks.

Lawmakers should stop decriminalizing recreational marijuana use, and allow it only as prescribed, via strict protocols, by licensed medical doctors. Even then, its use should be a last resort.

The latest worrisome study, released earlier this month, was conducted by researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and at the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Mental Health Services in the Capital Region of Denmark. Its most compelling finding is that “as many as 30% of cases of schizophrenia among men aged 21-30 might have been prevented by averting cannabis use disorder."

Schizophrenia, defined by the National Institutes of Mental Health, is “a mental disorder characterized by disruptions in thought processes, perceptions, emotional responsiveness, and social interactions ... Schizophrenia is typically persistent and can be both severe and disabling.”

It can be triggered by heavy pot use when it might otherwise not develop at all.

“The entanglement of substance use disorders and mental illnesses is a major public health issue, requiring urgent action and support for people who need it,” said NIDA Director and study coauthor Nora Volkow.

The existence of a link between marijuana use and schizophrenia has been known for decades, but the new study not only reaffirms the connection but also shows the problem’s growing severity, especially among young men. It blames the “increasing prevalence” of the problem on the “higher potency of cannabis” typically used today compared to typical street marijuana half a century ago.

“You haven’t lost a child to this, obviously. I have.”

Sorry for your loss.
I haven’t lost a child but lost a brother to schizophrenia many years ago. He committed suicide. He was never into marijuana or any drugs and never drank more than one drink at a sitting. Believe me I’m well acquainted with mental illness it runs in both sides of my family unfortunately. And the reason I chose not to have children myself. Knowing what I’ve been through myself I would never risk passing it on to any children I might have.

Does the mental illness promote smoking or the smoking promote mental illness? I suspect there is some of each. Certainly many more heavy users and stronger weed than back in the day.

People with schizophrenia also eat 3 times a day, poo and pee... What’s up with that?

Well, the piece cites a study that claims that “many as 30% of cases of schizophrenia among men aged 21-30 might have been prevented by averting cannabis use disorder.”

I do not make that claim, but it strikes me as a reasonable hypothesis.

I know for a fact that CA DUI laws do not carry different penalties depending on what the driver had in their system that caused the “Influence”. If you are accused of Driving Under the Influence in CA it covers prescribed medications, alcohol, marijuana, speed, everything & anything. All of the penalties (jail, fines, classes, probation) are exactly the same. I know people who were on their prescribed low dose pain med and paid the price. I even know a guy with a DUI for riding a skateboard stoned, because the vehicle doesn’t matter. On your news story that vanished: I know a girl who crashed a car and killed two passengers while completely sober in great weather and the first two news stories said that alcohol was probably involved. But, I’m talking about the DUI capital of the world, Ventura County, CA. It’s Different in other Counties and States.

The legalization of weed will not end well.

Can anyone name one POSITIVE “THING” that has occurred in those areas where weed is legal?

This association has been known for more than 50 years...

However, if you state the truth about it, even here, you will get the pro pot folks calling you a liar.

There is absolutely no difference in the law as to whether you are under the influence of alcohol or weed, or any other substance (legal or illegal) that impairs your ability to drive.

DUI is just that DUI, it does not distinguish or change punishment based on what substance you are Under the Influence of.

Compare to instances: 1. A person kills someone while driving a car while sober. 2. A person kills someone while driving a car while not sober. Which one gets more punishment?

Isn't it funny how the political right always claims to champion freedom, talks about state rights and decentralized governance, but then want ban something on a national level as soon as it's one of their issues.

Can anyone list a state or county where marijuana was decriminalized against the wishes of the majority in that area?

I actually agree with the banning of it's use in public areas, since people not partaking in this drug should not be exposed, no different than not needing to smell or inhale second hand cigarette smoke.

However, what people do on their private property, as consenting adults, is no one's business in regards to marijuana. If someone is going to pull this public health, environment or safety crap from their rear, then they should also accept it when the left use the same argument style to ban gas stoves, gasoline cars, ATVs, and guns... You can make ANYTHING into an environmental, public safety or health issue - ANYTHING.

There needs to be a direct correlation, a “provable causality,” and real damages (not dreamed up theoretic junk) for you to strip people of a freedom.

There has long been a contingent of big L Libertarians here who will defend dope to the end, this is true.

But they tend to quickly lose interest and wander off. Presumably to find snacks.

All shooters are on psychotropics. Think back. Before psychotropics crazed mass shooters were virtually unheard of. The connection is clear even though Pharma tries so hard to bury it. Pharma controls the MSM and keeps this data suppressed.
