Weekly Garden Thread - April 1-7, 2023 [Potpourri Edition]
April 1, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 04/01/2023 7:42:24 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Happy morning to you Diana.

A light dusting of the Devil’s Dandruff this morning here, but that will be gone by 10-ish, and I can continue removing the “Snow on the Mountain” that has taken over one of the flowerbeds. The stuff is evil, it propagates itself both with bulbs and underground runners.

Raining here & when the front makes it through, we are supposed to have “big” winds so under a wind advisory until midnight. The mountains could see gusts up to 70 mph. The AT maintenance crews just finished clearing the trail from an ice storm in early January so they’ll likely be back with more downed trees to deal with.

Gas cans are full as of Thursday so if the power goes out, I should be able to run the generator. Thursday evening, I mowed all of the yard & front field - 2 hours worth on the mower & I was frozen when I finished.

Seeds are germinating - most of them. I’m glad to be seeing some “action” in my little pots.

Tulips are blooming. Dad planted some along the fence (last thing he was doing before his fall). Only one of those came up & it’s white, which has a special meaning to me. Mom planted the rest of his bulbs & quite a few are up (red, pink, yellow - no white). It’s a pretty spring with all that is blooming.

Good morning! It stormed heavily last night at our house. We saw a newly downed tree that we will need to go check out later. We are on our way to Amish country near the Indiana/Michigan border for the day. Going to pick up a piece of furniture that we had some nice people build for us. It’s supposed to be snowing by the time we get all the way there. Heavy winds at the moment. I hope everyone stays safe where all these storms are heading.

I’ll be digging some potatoes out of the garage today to start getting ready as seed potatoes. Some are already sprouting.

It’s supposed to be really nice next week so I’ll try to get them in my culvert pipe sections.

I’m still working off onions from last year.

Now that the garden is snow free, I need to get out and survey the wreck that is is.

I think I’m going to pass on growing tomatoes this year. I have so many jars of sauce in the basement, I really don’t need to can up more.

However, I do have a large garlic crop planted and ready to take off, the asparagus bed to monitor for asparagus beetles, and the potatoes and onions to plant. The onions are so popular, I am increasing my crop of those.

I also bought some baby bok choy seeds. That’s supposed to be a very fast maturing crop.

I think I’ll try beans again and maybe some snow peas.

We got that storm and 70 mph winds last night, and the winds are continuing now. Heading up north for the day, and we saw power lines looking more like swinging jump ropes between the utility poles.

We just had the tree guys out on Thursday to take care of a fallen elm that was hung up. It was right on the path we take to the creek, so it needed to be dealt with. It will bring us nice firewood in another year’s time.

We saw a tree near the creek that has fallen from the storm last night, so will have to check that one closer, probably tomorrow. This should all pass by then and then we can assess any new damage.

Our daffodils are up and doing nicely. No tulips yet, but I see life popping through in the few spots we still have them. I really do love tulips and would like to plant some bulbs this year. Is the fall the right time to plant them for the Spring, correct? Or can I plant some bulbs soon for later blooming?

Still relatively calm here as far as the wind goes, but that’s likely to change before too long. We did get a half inch of rain overnight & this morning.

We’ve always planted bulbs (daffy & tulips) late fall for Spring blooming so I don’t know about planting now.

Unfortunately, squirrels & voles love the tulip bulbs & squirrels will also eat the blooms, unlike daffodils which are evidently poisonous to eat. We have one spot where mom planted tulips & when she checked to see why nothing was coming up, there were only holes where the bulbs had been!

Good morning. I just took a look at the rose bushes and discovered there are several buds forming! I don’t think they will be blooming by Easter; I know they will be enjoyable when they do bloom.

We have all kinds of varmints that wreck my flower gardens. Chipmunks may be cute to look at, but they are so destructive! I caught a bunny in the act last Spring eating one of my plants that I had *just* planted a day or before it destroyed it. It ate every blossom and almost all of the leaves. And what did I use to shoot it with? My camera. Cute little bunny, even if I was mad at him.

I just made a photo book of all the birds and animals that I share my yard with, and sent it off to my 2 year old grandson, so that he can begin to become familiar with them before his visit here this June. It will be his first visit to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. :)

Had to take a break at work yesterday for 20 minutes(so sad) and go hang out close to the tornado shelter area which is a hallway with block walls and no windows. Severe thunderstorm with rotation moving at 70 mph, tornado warning, tornado sirens.

They have pictures on the wall of their building after it was hit with a tornado several years ago. Needless to say, they take them pretty seriously.

I live in hill country so I don’t worry too much here but I work in the flat lands 40 miles away.

Today, windy. Went to the store and did the fast walk in because the wind was at my back and kind of pushed me towards the store. I’m staying in today.
