Investigation into Verra carbon standard finds most are ‘phantom credits’ and may worsen global heating
The forest carbon offsets approved by the world’s leading certifier and used by Disney, Shell, Gucci and other big corporations are largely worthless and could make global heating worse, according to a new investigation.
The research into Verra, the world’s leading carbon standard for the rapidly growing $2bn (£1.6bn) voluntary offsets market, has found that, based on analysis of a significant percentage of the projects, more than 90% of their rainforest offset credits – among the most commonly used by companies – are likely to be “phantom credits” and do not represent genuine carbon reductions.
The analysis raises questions over the credits bought by a number of internationally renowned companies – some of them have labelled their products “carbon neutral”, or have told their consumers they can fly, buy new clothes or eat certain foods without making the climate crisis worse.
But doubts have been raised repeatedly over whether they are really effective.
The nine-month investigation has been undertaken by the Guardian, the German weekly Die Zeit and SourceMaterial, a non-profit investigative journalism organisation. It is based on new analysis of scientific studies of Verra’s rainforest schemes.

They’re worthless because you can’t change the Milankovitch cycle by removing plantfood from the atmosphere.
You mean Green Indulgences won’t get you into heaven?.....errr I mean....won’t offset “Global Warming”?
How can I virtue signal while still living my massive massive private jet/yacht/energy sucking mansion high carbon lifestyle now???? This is a catastrophe!
Surely, you don’t expect me to live like those lowly peasants do you?
This from The Guardian!
Wonder what James O'Keefe would link over here.
Better let John F Kerry know.
It’s not worthless to those who are paid for the scam.
This is not a surprise. A geologist explained this to me years ago.
Carbon offsets were never intended to actually reduce carbon in the atmosphere. Their purpose was to allow people like Al Gore to do whatever they want while restricting the behavior and opportunities of others.
One of the options in the reservation system is for the customer to pay $1 or $2 per day in “carbon reduction credits” or some crap like that.
I couldn’t imagine what kind of moron checks that box when making a rental car reservation.
Carbon offsets are worthless. Something normal people with common sense always knew, the same way we know man made climate change is hoax and that the climate continually changes
It was designed as a shell game and guess what?
It IS!
9 month study for something obvious in 9 seconds?
Reminds me a little bit of wetland preservation credits. A developer can buy a bunch of wetlands 100 miles away and then fill in the wetland on his development property. Pros and cons to that, but a wetland directly affects the local environment (runoff, habitat, etc.) so I’m mostly against it when it comes to the guys with money being able to buy themselves out of a jam.
Meanwhile, our neighbor down the street wanted to put a culvert in the 1-foot deep and 2-foot wide drainage ditch in his yard next to the street. It would have a bit of water in it each spring. They went to the city to try to get a permit and do all the right things.
Turns out the city classified it as the head waters of a salmon river so he couldn’t do anything about it.
The new owners of the house never bothered to ask the city or get permits and just filled it in with dirt. The city never noticed.
I’ve read horror stories too of folks that have planted decorative wetland plants in their yards - only to have turned them into “wetlands” and now they can’t do anything with their yards.
Or the guy that had property that included a creek going under the road, and folks would toss their garbage into it and the county wouldn’t clean it. So he went in and cleaned it out and had to clear some invasive blackberries to get to the trash (large appliances, etc.).
After he was done cleaning it all up and paying for the dump fees, the county fined him for destruction of wetland habitat!
Thanks for posting.

It’s the same moron you see wearing a mask while riding a bicycle.
EC
How many hundreds of billions of dollars worth were among the assets of Silicon Valley Bank?
You mean I shouldn’t be doing that? :-P
Still be a scam even if it was real.
Exactly right. It is fake science and total bull merd. Someone is making a killing on absurdity.
