Legendary TV star Dick Van Dyke reportedly was injured when he crashed his Lexus in Malibu after losing control behind the wheel.

The 97-year-old actor’s car skidded in wet weather conditions before smashing into a gate on Wednesday morning, TMZ reports.

The ordeal left him with a bloody nose and mouth, as well as a possible concussion.

Police arrived to find the Hollywood veteran behind the wheel of his Lexus LS 500, TMZ added.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics.

I wish you didn't tell us that. I'd much rather picture him coming home to Laura Petries every night.

Ha ha! Yeah, Dr. S, it's not a great visual in my mind, either. I think you might get a kick out of this, though... When we were all waiting for his arrival to do the shoot at the club, the DJ brilliantly had him set up. When DVD walked in, the DJ surprised him as he got on his mic and announced "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Mr Dick Van Dyke!" then promptly put on a record of the DICK VAN DYKE SHOW theme. Well, Dick didn't miss a beat and arched his shoulders back and came bustling in the place, waving at us all - then did a mock trip, right on the music cue! Of course, we all busted up and applauded his improv. THAT was a cool thing to see!

There is a YouTube video show many of the takes needed to get the trip right. He tripped over and over again. The one where he sidesteps the Ottoman was improvised and was used later.

Also, Dick Van Dyke did a video on driver safety 60 years ago after a accident where he hit a wall at 50 mph. Lap belt saved him. He hasn’t learned yet!

Owning a car is expensive, at my vacation home I do not have a car.

I'm currently at our winter home and there's no way we could get by with even one vehicle, let alone no vehicle. We each need our own vehicle at all times. There's just too much going on to try and survive without two vehicles.

Give him a break.
I hope to be breathing and walking at 97.
He is driving a car in Malibu.

Plenty of people crash in bad weather conditions. Most states make older people go through vision tests frequently to maintain their license. Everybody ages differently. Van Dyke is pretty darn spry for 97. He only looks 80 something.

I'm not a kid anymore. My girlfriend,10 years younger than me (yah,I know...robbing the cradle) always makes fun of the fact that I'm always the guy in the right lane of I-90...or 95...or 684...with the cruise control set at 66MPH. Even at my age...no longer 50 and not yet 80...I can feel my abilities slipping just a bit, particularly my confidence. I can easily see myself in a few years being on I-90 with the cruise control set at 60 (or slower).

I stick by my opinion: mandatory medical certification required at "X"...and no licenses issued after "Y".

Well good for all of us you’re not in charge. Cause your idea is dumb.

Understand. We had a similar experience twice over. My dad developed vascular dementia and was a dangerous driver. We had to hide the car keys and eventually remove the battery from the car. As part of the dementia progression, he, too, was combative, then accepting.

My uncle had Alzheimer’s. Early one Saturday morning, my aunt received a call from the DMV all the way across town to say her husband was there attempting to pass a driver’s test (and failing). Unknown to my aunt, he had left the house before daylight. End of his driving attempts.

It’s hard to see strong, capable persons decline. I know my reflexes and reaction time have slowed. Extra careful now, drive in the daytime and stay at or below the speed limit. Get on the freeway outside of rush hours.

said, "all states should require some kind of comprehensive medical evaluation"

They already do. You have to turn in the license renewal form.

As far as "medical evaluation"
Have you gotten your 15th booster?

"My aunt (beginnings of dementia) went to ANOTHER doctor who cleared her at the DMV and she was able to get her license back again."

Then your saying she was able to understand enough to go too another doctor to stop her family from meddling in her life?
Sounds like your cousin over reacted and the doctor went along to avoid trouble. Much like they did with the injections.

My Mom died young (cancer) but my Dad reached 88. The last few years of his life were heartbreaking for us to witness thanks both the his neurological problems *and* his COPD. But it became obvious at one point that he was a danger to himself...and others. We cared far more about his well being so for that reason alone it was time for him to stop driving.

As I've said given the slight "deterioration" I've already seen in myself it's not difficult to imagine that I will eventually become a danger to myself (and others) behind the wheel. I guess the only other option you have to growing old is *not* growing old.

Hopefully your family is never nailed by an 90 year old guy with recent vision changes,a history of “TIAs” (those are “mini strokes”) while driving,at night,in a place unfamiliar to him.

But how is that different than a 33 year old guy who just wasn’t paying attention? Again Van Dyke was driving in bad weather and there were probably plenty of people in the area far younger than him that also hit a bad patch of road and got in accidents. Your assumption about age is just silly. Sure some people get old and lose the skills. Some don’t. There’s a lot of genetic and lifestyle lottery in how we age and what skills we maintain and lose over the course of it. To blanket say “90 year olds can’t drive” is, as I already said DUMB.

Not bad for 97. Sammy Hagar couldn’t drive at 55.

Hagar wrote the song in response to receiving a speeding ticket in New York State, for driving 62 mph (100 km/h) on a road with a 55 mph (89 km/h) speed limit, which was the highest permissible speed limit in the United States at the time due to the National Maximum Speed Law enacted in 1974.

She had been in numerous fender benders, would stop in the middle of the street for no reason, ran red lights, claimed “she didn’t see them,” rammed the back of the garage repeatedly because the “brake peddle wasn’t where it was supposed to be,” - all while appearing completely lucid - my family was trying to protect other drivers out there from an elderly relative who should not have been driving.

Fortunately, she entered a nursing home before she could kill anyone.

The doctor that over-rode our family and the original doctor and restored this relative’s driving ability should have been made to take a drive with her.

That is all.
