Legendary TV star Dick Van Dyke reportedly was injured when he crashed his Lexus in Malibu after losing control behind the wheel.

The 97-year-old actor’s car skidded in wet weather conditions before smashing into a gate on Wednesday morning, TMZ reports.

The ordeal left him with a bloody nose and mouth, as well as a possible concussion.

Police arrived to find the Hollywood veteran behind the wheel of his Lexus LS 500, TMZ added.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics.

I agree. My cousin got her mother’s doctor to notify the DMV (Indiana) NOT to renew her mother’s driver’s license again - she was mid-80s, in the beginnings of dementia and had been in a number of accidents, fortunately, no one was hurt.

My aunt went to ANOTHER doctor who cleared her at the DMV and she was able to get her license back again.

Some people enjoy going for a drive - it’s not always just getting from A to B. Older folks especially, who can pass the test often see driving themselves as proof of their independence.

“has money to pay someone to drive him”

Really, you think a retired chiminy sweep has that kind of dough?

If I make it to 97 I want a self-driving car.

It has gotta be safer than if I drive.

Easy there, Mister. You keep talking like that and someone’s going to get the ridiculous idea that there should be age limits for people in Congress! You know that just can’t be allowed to happen.

PA could use a senator like you.

I could only win as Senator from PA after a truck ran me over—a couple of times.

I love road trips, my bride and I take 2-3 a year. Austin, San Antone, Fredricksberg is our favorite.

His wife is going to start hiding his car keys again, for his own safety.
Maybe she’ll drop them down the front of her blouse. Seems to work in those old movies.

When my Dad was in his early 80s he had, what was later diagnosed as,an early organic brain syndrome similar to Altzheimer's. I hadn't driven with him in a while by my aunts (his sisters) had reported to me that it was scary to drive with him.

I got his PCP to refer him to a clinic that evaluates a person's fitness to drive. He failed. His PCP then told him he was reporting the failure to the DMV. My Dad,usually a calm and non-combative guy, said "I'll sue" (I was there).

Understandably the doctor backed off so we knew that we had to step in. We finally convinced him to stop driving and we made sure that he always got to where he needed,or wanted,to go.

Wow. He is still driving at 97. He has had a long run but may wish to reconsider driving himself.

In 1990, Dick Van Dyke and I sat at a small stripper pole table in Glendale, CO as we casually watched a topless girl dance for us during gaffer set up on a DIAGNOSIS MURDER shoot. I was too young and intimidated to start a conversation at the awkward situation - and it was a very surreal thing to be at a stripper table with my childhood film star idol.

Endless weeks of nice weather allows a significant amount of oil to collect on street surfaces. The first rain displaces the oil in the pavement with water and the oil floats on top. The surface becomes very slick and dangerous. It's bad for any driver. Slower reflexes at age 97 just magnifies the problem.

I wish you didn't tell us that. I'd much rather picture him coming home to Laura Petries every night.

My mom gave up her keys and sold her cars two years after my father passed. She was 77 at the time. She was cognitively fine with good reflexes, but her vision had failed to due wet AMD in one eye. She didn't feel confident in her ability to see clearly as a driver. She lived to age 83 and wasn't particularly happy about losing her independence to travel.

I'm turning 67 this year. For many years I did the "road warrior" existence with 950 mile drives between San Diego and Pocatello in a single day. An 1800 mile drive from Birmingham, AL to Salt Lake City, UT in 46 hours door to door. I really don't enjoy it anymore. My 50th high school reunion is coming up in September. Another 950 mile trek to participate. I really don't want to get into an airplane and risk getting sick. I've scaled back my motorcycle riding as well. The San Diego<-->Pocatello round trip in 2012 was pretty demanding on the Harley Fat Bob.

That would have been a classic conversation, I’m sure. Funny story. But it shows that even “stars” are just people.

And I'd also support no licenses to be issued to someone over a certain age...maybe 90,maybe even younger.

They need them for ID when buying alcohol.
