Is It Time To Move the Capital? | Opinion

The time has come to think the unthinkable: move the capital. Crime, disorder, and an irresponsible local government are Washington's liabilities.

The Constitution sets up no barriers to moving the capital to a new location. Article I, Section 8 says only that Congress shall exercise exclusive jurisdiction over a district designated as the seat of government as ceded by particular states and not exceeding 10 square miles in area. Congress can move the capital by statute if it wishes to do so. A constitutional amendment is not required.

I vote for Rachel, Nevada, 15 miles east of the back gate to Area 51.

Move it to Ukraine. Everyone in Washington loves Ukraine so much, let them enjoy the scenery.

The article is about moving the Capital City.

No, there is no 'city' mentioned in the US Constitution, but the Capitol where Congress meets is. That is why it is capitalized.

I propose a “hopping capital”, maybe 5 years in one state, then 5 years in another state, then 5 years, ...

No state gets more than 5 years until it starts all over again.

It is unknown which state is next until 3 months before the end of the current state’s turn.

I’m pretty sure the Demons will figure out a way to corrupt that process, but it will take a while.

Move it to Avalon on Catalina island. That Casino building. 2 floors-one for the house and one for the senate. A cruise ship could house the congressmen and their staffs-make them not want to stick around as it should be. January 6ers on the left would have to protest in LA.

There is no big city that’s much less dangerous than D.C. That’s why a whole new city was suggested. Brasilia is a bad example.

Froggy-good idea. The NFL got smart and moved the draft to different cities who now get 300k visitors to attend. Even moved it to prime time. Even businesses are slow to catch on but they do eventually.

I have been a supporter of this for a while. I think this may be the only way to save Virginia from being dominated by transplanted liberals. My idea would be to move various departments to cities already lost to liberal lunacy Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Las Angeles, etc. The move can be framed as a jobs program to help these cities.

Permanently moving the capital would just create another cesspool like D.C. in short order. Leave the federal buildings and records where they are, with minimal staff. As others have said, disperse all federal agencies to different geographic areas around the country, for sure. But do one more thing.

Make the Congress change its meeting place like we change the Superbowl location. Let Congress meet no more than 2 consecutive years and then move to a different state. Like those federal mint quarters, require Congress to meet in every state. That will also break up the liberal lobbyist colonies around D.C. in Virginia and Maryland.

If the writer of the Newsweek article doesn’t know the difference between capitol and capital, you’d think that the editor would catch it.

As in virtually every sector, the ruins left behind by the WOKE NEA are glaringly apparent.

Oh, it's correct. If you move the Capitol, the capital will follow. K Street will magically reappear in whatever new local is chosen.

You’re right — why centralize everything in DC?

In the current world of Instant messenger, we don’t need to centralize

You should go back and check for the word "Capitol" in the US Constitution.

I would prefer to have all 535 congresscritters in their home districts. We have had distributed meetings for years, shown to work at scale during the pandemic.

We could lower salaries because the members wouldn't need to cover the cost of a second home, travel to and from, and the other expense involved with Going to Washington. No more having a separate office in WashDC.

No more K Street.

As for the Department of Energy, I vote for Yucca Mountain as their new home.
