In direct contrast to the powerful, accusatory language of the Declaration of Independence, and the lengthy detail of each of the Articles of the Constitution, the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights is plainspoken and succinct:

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell joined a chorus of widespread attacks on Fox News host Tucker Carlson for his portrayal of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol since he accessed more than 40,000 hours of security footage.

During their brief visits to the nearby town of Kostiantynivka, Ukrainian infantrymen told the Kyiv Independent of unprepared, poorly-trained battalions being thrown into the front line meat grinder to survive as best they could with little support from armored vehicles, mortars, artillery, drones and tactical information.
“We don’t get any support,” says a soldier named Serhiy, who has been fighting on the front lines in Bakhmut.
They say that Russian artillery, infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers are often allowed to strike Ukrainian positions for hours or days without being shut down by Ukrainian heavy weapons. Some complained of poor coordination and situational awareness, allowing this to happen or making it even worse.
Mortarmen spoke of extreme ammunition scarcity and having to use weapons dating back to World War II. Drones that are supposed to provide critical reconnaissance information are also scarce and are being lost at very high rates in some parts of the battlefield.
All this leads to terrifying casualties of both dead and wounded. “The battalion came in in the middle of December… between all the different platoons, there were 500 of us,” says Borys, a combat medic from Odesa Oblast fighting around Bakhmut. “A month ago, there were literally 150 of us.”
“When you go out to the position, it’s not even a 50/50 chance that you’ll come out of there (alive),” says the older Serhiy. “It’s more like 30/70.”

Ukrainian soldiers fighting in Bakhmut (Artemovsk) told AFP that some units have already begun to leave the city.
“Bakhmut will fall,” said one of the APU fighters in an interview with AFP. We are almost surrounded. Parts are gradually retreating in small groups. He said that the only way out of Bakhmut was along dirt roads leading to Chasov Yar. According to him, if tanks get stuck there, they can become a target for artillery fire.

According to the Military Chronicle, the retreating units of the Ukrainian army massively leave heavy equipment in the city and suburbs due to fears of artillery strikes by PMC Wagner and aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces. The light equipment used for the retreat cannot cope with off-road conditions.
On muddy roads, pickup trucks and cars get stuck and roll over, after which their use becomes impossible.
Infantry units abandon heavy weapons along the roads, leave only with small arms and almost instantly fall under artillery strikes.

RND: “Bakhmut will soon fall”: the retreat of Ukrainian soldiers continues
Austrian military expert Reisner said in an interview with RND that the losses on the Ukrainian side are very high. He noted that “thanks to the ongoing pressure in Artemovsk, Russia was able to prevent the Ukrainian offensive in the Melitopol region for the time being.”
According to the expert, the bulk of the Ukrainian soldiers have already been withdrawn from the city during the retreat, which began two weeks ago.

Russian troops will have “open road” to capture key cities in eastern Ukraine if they seize control of Bakhmut, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in an interview with CNN, as he defended his decision to keep Ukrainian forces in the besieged city.
“This is tactical for us,” Zelensky said, insisting that Kyiv’s military brass is united in prolonging its defense of the city after weeks of Russian attacks left it on the cusp of falling to Moscow’s troops.
“We understand that after Bakhmut they could go further. They could go to Kramatorsk, they could go to Sloviansk, it would be open road for the Russians after Bakhmut to other towns in Ukraine, in the Donetsk direction,” he told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer in an exclusive interview from Kyiv. “That’s why our guys are standing there.”
Some commanders and lower level officers have questioned the merit of holding Bakhmut amid a rising number of casualties and a growing risk that hundreds or even thousands of Ukrainian troops could get cut off.
But Zelensky dismissed those concerns, saying he has “never heard anything like that” from his commanders.
“We have to think about our people first and no one should be surrounded, encircled – this is very important,” he said.
