After a year of hard fighting there are a rush of observers trying to make sense of the current balance of power in Ukraine. The focus in often on (often small) movements in the frontlines, casualties, or the performance of particular platforms and systems.
Those things matter, but wars are not generally fought to take individual trenches or solely to inflict casualties. They are fought for strategic objectives.
In this episode I dig into Russia's history of Empire, its modern strategic objectives, and try to assess whether or not the war in Ukraine represents a success or failure by Russia's own chosen metrics (as far as they can be determined). My suggestion is that in repeating a number of the mistakes previously made by leaders of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, it can be argued that Putin has already condemned the Russian federation to a strategic reverse.
What remains to be seen, is whether Ukraine can win a victory from Russia's defeat, or if it will be left to lose as well.
I’m not worried.
The CCP-owned military genius who abandoned thousands of US personnel and $85,000,000,000 of US materiel in Afghanistan in the middle of the night is conducting the war with Russia.
Orange Putin Bad is doomed!
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has not only been a strategic failure but a catastrophe for the Russian people. It has shown the Chinese that without nuclear weapons, Russia has no conventional ability to defend its rich Asian-Pacific territories or its Siberian treasure house. The Chinese make no secret that they covet these places.
Absolutely, it was a failure pretty quickly actually. Now it’s just a bloody expensive mess costing needless lives which will 100% end in Russian failure.
Ukraine need only fight on, with or without help makes no difference to the eventual outcome. Help will only affect the timeline or Russia eventually giving up.
By mid summer Ukraine will sign a peace treaty giving Russia 25% of Ukraine and Crimea and NATO will have lost 50% of their materiel so big loss for Russia.
Of course it is. Putin and his people thought the Ukies would fold in a month at most. They thought Zelensky would jump at Biden’s offer of a C17 to take him out of the country. A year later and they’re suck in a conventional army t army ground war. He cannot back out now so he will use whatever force necessary to grind the Ukies to dust. There is no way now the Ukies can win if there ever was. They fought a good fight but somehow this has got to stop.
None of this is good for any of them, or us. None of it.
The de-Nazification of Ukraine is also largely be achieved.
All the remains is destroying what's left of the Ukrainian army within its new territories and assuring Ukraine is no longer a military threat to Russia in the future.
Russia alone has met and is now overmatching America and all 30 NATO member states. Hardly a rout.
“Of course it is. Putin and his people thought the Ukies would fold in a month at most.”
Link please.
X's China will be the only winner. Russia weakend. The West drained. Welcome the Chinese hegemony.
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has not only been a strategic failure but a catastrophe for the Russian people.

Sorry, having trained Ivan’s for three years in Moscow, my friends there report no such thing. Ruble increases steadily, all social programs, ie pensions increasing, inflation down, yes down from highs, and most( not all) celebrating the take down of US hedgemony, and most importantly huge national sentiment…keep reading western MSM, you are going to wake up with one heck of a hangover!
It’s a strategic failure for the US, not Russia. Western economies are in dire straights while Russia continues to coast along with their gas & oil revenues. On Tuesday Putin makes his case for an investigation of who blew up Nordstream 2 before the UN. I wonder how the German people will feel once they realize we blew up a vital pipeline of theirs? My prediction is we are looking at the beginning of NATO coming apart over this.
Russia has a smashing success it seems.
NATO NATO NATO looks weak and ineffective.
Ukraine got pummeled.
That actor guy in the green T-shirt and the Brandon clan became even more grifter wealthy.
Putin got his Donbas Crimea and landbridge to Crimea.
Everything good for everyone except the late great U.S.A., now engaged in barroon warfare.
Putin has succeeded in emptying out weapons stockpiles in EU and also in US.
Russia is kicking NATO’s collective butt using prison freedom fighters, genius...maybe its time you woke up.
“ By mid summer Ukraine will sign a peace treaty giving Russia 25% of Ukraine and Crimea and NATO will have lost 50% of their materiel so big loss for Russia.”
And we will be unable to fight in the Pacific when China does its thing.

Failure, like when Sixth Army was within 50 yards of Red October Tractor Factory?
This isn’t Granada, and it isn’t Kuwait. It’s not Iraq. It’s not even Afghanistan.
