US Navy sailors used to be able to jump off of aircraft carrier flight decks. They could even climb up the anchor chains and jump off the anchor ... all in the name of FUN! But FUN and SAFETY needs to be balanced. That's why drinking rules for Navy sailors are a lot more strict than they were a few decades ago. Swim calls and steel beach parties are still popular activities for US Navy sailors, but the dangers that are involved in some of these activities, and how the Navy tries to mitigate them...

1980 for me. USS Mars (AFS-1), going from outside the Persian Gulf to Diego Garcia. The first time we crossed there were hardly any shellbacks on board so it was fairly easy. I wore the top of my boots down to the steel toe crawling around the deck, though. The next time we crossed the ratio was completely reversed. The new guys paid for their cards...dearly. A new asshole ensign was abused so bad they pulled him out and still gave him his certificate. Oh the good old days.

This has got to be the most stupid single remark ever posted here. The TAXPAYERS pay for the manning, equipping and the operations of the armed forces, every dollar, If anyone has the right to express themselves on the subject it is those who pay the fright. The US armed forces are not a band of heroes, although some are, nor are they staffed by the Knights of the Round Table, They are mostly a slightly above average collection of men and now women who for a wide variety of reasons elect to take Uncle Sam’s shilling. They are mostly not flag waving jingos and they generally do their duty. Most, especially the USAF, are never in any real danger in the course of their enlistment. There are the usual number of scoundrels, fools, and ignoramuses among their ranks and any candid member of the armed forces will admit that. Being that it is, they should not be deployed or used for frivilous or foolish reasons or to satisfy beltway mandarins self glorifying schemes and follies. In the case of the subject of the original post it seemed quite possible that the USN would think it wonderful to get the various ‘colored shirt’ people on a carrier to form something that resembles the Gay Pride flag. The wretched Secnav Ray Mabus was a willing whore because he really needed the salary to push the Navy out front in ‘queering the force’. The USN now allows personnel on shipboard to bunk by sexual preference, has constantly harped on queer this and queer that and how great the loud and proud queers of the USN are. All must remember how much noise the Navy Public Affairs Office made over the all queer all the time fleet helicopter crew. So why would some scummy trick to get Navy personnel to form s Gay Pride Flag formation be thought absurd.
I was on the USS Leahy. It was a Flag Ship, the Admiral was a Shellback but the Skipper was not. The day before we crossed there was a Pollywog revolt... We got even first, but we paid for it later.
