US Navy sailors used to be able to jump off of aircraft carrier flight decks. They could even climb up the anchor chains and jump off the anchor ... all in the name of FUN! But FUN and SAFETY needs to be balanced. That's why drinking rules for Navy sailors are a lot more strict than they were a few decades ago. Swim calls and steel beach parties are still popular activities for US Navy sailors, but the dangers that are involved in some of these activities, and how the Navy tries to mitigate them...

Because they are to busy dressing up in the colors of the Fag Flag??
Anyone just watch the National anthem of the Super Bowl?? The camera switched to a US Naval Carrier. There were a bunch of sailors dressed in the colors or the Fag Flag and standing in alignment to look like the Fag Flag

The thought of a ~60+ foot drop off Forrestal’s flight deck was more than enough deterrent for me!!!

That wasn’t a gay flag.
Those in red shirts are ordinance specialists, green for another duty, white shirts are shooters I think…brown shirts are another group…

My grand father got his shellback around 1915-6 (I think). He was a cook on submarines.

I never dropped 60 feet, but I dropped from 40 feet into Victory Pond at Benning. Went under a long way before surfacing. Can just imagine an extra 20 feet.

I hope i am wrong and you are all correct- it sure as hell looked like they were mimicking the fag flag.
I have never seen anything like that before when they would show sailors on the deck of a US carrier.

When I was in, I wore Red which was for the fire party on the flight deck. I sat there with a hose for hours waiting to put out a crash that thankfully never happened. I think purple guys were for refueling. Yellow were like the guys that directed the landings (we had a helo deck). I can’t remember Brown. They might have been the flight crews. We called them “airdales”.
But, I suppose making snap judgements about our sailors might be fun for some. Thanks for putting it into proper context.
