WALES, Alaska (KTUU) - A polar bear attacked and killed two people in Wales, on the western tip of the Seward Peninsula, Tuesday afternoon
Troopers wrote in a dispatch that they received the report at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday involving a woman and a young boy.
Troopers identified the victims Wednesday morning as 24-year-old Summer Myomick, of St. Michael, and her 1-year-old son Clyde Ongtowasruk.
The attack occurred in the village near the school, troopers said. The two were walking between the clinic and the school when the attack occurred.
Susan Nedza is the Chief School Administrator for the Bering Strait School District which includes the K-12 school in Wales. Nedza said the school’s principal called her while the attack was ongoing just outside the school’s front entrance...The principal told her several school employees went outside to see if they could stop the attack.
“Some of them actually were outside at one point trying to hit the bear with shovels to get it to stop, and it wouldn’t,” said Nedza. “It chased them actually and tried to come into the school when the principal let them in to keep them safe. So it tried to come in and they were able to close the door and keep it outside.”
A short time later, Nedza said, a community member arrived and shot the bear.

But, But I thought that globull warming had wiped out the polar bears .......
“A short time later, Nedza said, a community member arrived and shot the bear.”
AK is armed. And know there are such threats.
Very sorry for loss of human life.
Bear Ping!
Gun free zone. In remote Alaska, that’s insanity. Prayers for these two souls.
Horrible. You would think Alaska would have their bear population under control, so a polar bear doesn’t go where people are.
“Some of them actually were outside at one point trying to hit the bear with shovels to get it to stop, and it wouldn’t,”
Hmm, what is missing here?
You mean polar bears don’t go and hug people for driving a Nissan Leaf?
Why would they not have some sort of protection at the school in bear country? One rifle or SW 460 magnum could have provided a better outcome.
Can’t get much more remote (or west) than that. In the dead of winter too. Looks like maybe less than 100 yards between the clinic and the school. Horrible.
I’ve spent some time in Wales over the years, it is one of the villages in Alaska where you can see Russia from your house. My times there were spent with a family of reindeer herders with the same last name as the child who was killed. Wales is a very small village on the north west coast of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. One trip I was there in winter and rented a snow machine to go out in the country to retrieve reindeer radio/satellite collars. My armed herder escort had the same name as the child. He had asked my where was my weapon, and I responded, that’s what I’m depending on you for. Sadly he passed a few years after that trip. Wales is a hard living kind of place. A small airstrip and a daily mail run plane if the weather permits to get in or out. Gotta respect those that live there.
A 50-cal?
That’s why I have a rifle.
For Polar Bear attacks....................in Florida.................You never know...................
It was a school................Gun Free Zone..................
And a flame thrower.
People in schools can have guns if they’re authorized. Some local schools have armed security guards but a teacher could do it as well.
It sounds like nobody had taken up this duty.
PS - in other stories globull warming is on the first sentence, the propaganda never stops.
My aunt said to run in a crooked line...it confuses them. I say...run for my life is the smart way to go.
Why wasn’t this bear hibernating?......................
Well, you have alligators and python snakes.
I own a bear gun. enough said?
Most of what I shoot is 30 caliber and up.
I like to reload. That way, I can get the ammo I want. Not what happens to be available at a particular moment in time.
Have you noticed that components are becoming more available than it has been for several years? Some primers are beginning to be available and suddenly WalMart has ammo on it’s shelf (prices are high, money is tight)
Home prices are down somewhat, because of higher interest rates. And higher taxes due to the recently past spike in home prices all over Texas.
So market for homes is somewhat down.
We have black bears, panthers, coyotes and bobcats as well..................
