I had an absolutely gorgeous muskrat parka for many years and sold it when I moved to Hawaii. I wish I still had it.
We old hunters have been around the block, LOL.
Not as many hunters as there used to be, at least here.
For many, it was the only exercise they got, all year.
Out of shape, overweight.
And then they find out, painfully and too late, that they have 100% blockage of the left anterior descending coronary artery.
This reminds me of a “bizarre gardening accident” that I had four years ago. I was walking out on my farm to sprinkle seeds for a cover crop on my garden after the first snow in November. I slipped and came down on my right ankle and did a total dislocation of the foot and a spiral fracture. My foot was flopping around. I didn’t have my phone and Mr. Mercat was in town. I dragged myself the length of a football field up the back porch steps into the house to get my phone. I don’t remember much after that but ended up in an ambulance. Major surgery and three months in bed.
I only go up as high as I want to fall. About 12’ in a ladder stand. The climber is in the attic.
—”He was exhausted but was bring that deer with him, come hell or high water! “
The guys I hunt with usually hunt in one area, but Dick was certain he knew a better spot...
At the end of the day, where’s Dick?
Back out we go... And there is Dick with a beautiful 10-point whitetail on his shoulders, we were much younger then.
Asked why de didn’t return for a 4WD, he didn’t want to take a chance with coyotes damaging his deer.
And still hangs in his living room.

YIKES!!!
I had a cousin die from a fall from a tree stand. He didn’t die immediately. Bad deal.
Two is one and one is none.

“And still hangs in his living room.”
++++
And that is where it should remain, no matter any wife’s redecoration plans for the room. A man’s deer hunt stories culminate in that one main mount on the wall. That story should be handed down and remembered throughout the generations. When my mother passed away a few months ago, Dad’s big mount was still above the “spot” where his chair had been, even though the chair itself has changed over the past twenty-five years since he has been gone.
No other sibling mentioned that deer mount nor asked for it, and I was glad none of them wanted it because we did. Now it has a spot in my home near my hubby, son, and grandson’s mounts, and the hunting stories and legacy can live on through the generations.
Good fly tying material, as well. Similar to beaver, but gray in color.
Do you mean he might actually have to resort to actual hunting rather than ambushing?
My parents had a business associate back in the 80’s who suddenly stopped making the rounds at their business. They enquired and was told he fell out of a tree stand and lost part of his manhood in the process(one of the boys got ripped off-ouch!) and nearly died until his family came looking for him.
Now that’s a bad day
