Jeff Beck, among the most innovative and certainly the most unpredictable of ’60s guitar heroes, has died. He was 78.
A fleet, imaginative soloist, Beck brought formidable instrumental firepower to British band the Yardbirds, which he joined in 1965 as a replacement for Eric Clapton. Entirely at home with the group’s blues roots, he burnished their pop hits with an adventurous and virtually unprecedented use of feedback, sustain and fuzz.

Jeff Beck was one of a kind
“There have been many brilliant guitarists over the past century but every million years or so, a genius comes along whose singular command of the instrument is so nuanced, natural and novel. Jeff Beck's playing made me smile and made me cry and made me try to be a better player and most of all, made me and countless others seek the ultimate expression of who we are as players. Thank you, Jeff.”
RUSH did an album of cover songs of the groups that influenced them as teens. They did two Yardbirds songs in that album (”Feedback”).
Here is an acoustic live version of “Heart Full of Soul” played by RUSH:
I saw him at the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley way back in ‘78 . That is a wonderful venue .Not too big, great sound, wonderful view .
There was a series of concerts, “Guitar Greats”. I saw Beck, Al Di Meola and Santana that summer.

My father at age 72 contracted bacterial meningitis in 1993 and it nearly killed him. A week in ICU and over a month in the hospital.
We don’t know how or where he got it, but he was a diabetic and had recently worked on a bathroom renovation and had cut his hand while removing an old toilet.
He recovered but after that his health went down hill dramatically.
Removing a toilet at 72? Hats off to your Father.
Aside from the diabetes which he had under control, he was in good shape and while “retired” still did side work to augment the SS.
It's a good example of how well he improvised with the singers he accompanied.
Wish I could find where they played together on the same stge. Do you know if they ever did? 🙂
Good for him! Sorry to hear about his medical troubles.
Rough and Ready is one of the all time great guitar jams.
Turn it up so loud that Jeff can hear it in Heaven.

Of the guitar masters of his era (Page, Clapton, Beck), I consider Jeff as the most brilliant.
He never stopped creating, was so innovative and with a unique playing style. He went far beyond rock.
Jimmy Page played bass and Beck played lead for at least one tour with the Yardbirds.
RIP Jeff Beck
No mention of Pat Travers who is also one of the great guitarist.
