PHILADELPHIA (KYW) - Some dark chocolates have been found to contain potentially dangerous amounts of heavy metals.
Dark chocolate, loaded with antioxidants, is often called healthier chocolate.
But a new study from Consumer Reports said some kinds of dark chocolate contain potentially dangerous amounts of heavy metals.

“All of the samples that we tested had detectable levels of either cadmium or lead,” said James Rogers of Consumer Reports.
Rogers said 23 of the 28 samples tested exceeded the safety levels used in the study.
The study shared that cadmium found in soil, can infiltrate coco plants and lead contamination could happen in processing chocolate
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, long-term exposure to heavy metals can cause a variety of health issues, including brain damage and kidney and heart disease.
“It can affect different types of mental issues with children and fetuses of pregnant women,” Rogers said.
According to the study, researchers tested different brands, including organic varieties.
Higher concentrations of cacao used to make dark chocolate were linked to higher metal levels, according to the report.
“Just eating one ounce daily would expose you to enough heavy metals to be concerning,” Rogers said.
The National Confectioners Association released the following statement:
“Standards cited in the Consumer Reports study are not food safety standards. The products cited in this study are in compliance with strict quality and safety requirements.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the presence of cadmium and lead in chocolate is well documented and is not dangerous for most people if consumed occasionally.
The NCA released research in August showing ways that lead and cadmium in chocolate could be reduced, including having cocoa farmers plant new tree stock.
Orwell was a political prophet.
My Dad had me watch animal farm and 1984 when I was growing up. It definitely influenced my thinking for the rest of my life.
It's probably part of some Chinese additive...
Eat only Bakers All Natural 100 percent cocoa unsweet baking (Kraft Heinz but actually only one without cadmium or lead as per Consumerlabs dark chocolate comparisons).
I hope it's not the kind that eat coco plants.
CR study was using California standards, measured in micrograms.
Yet once again:
All things in moderation.

“Detectable levels”
That’s the key phrase right there. The ability to frighten the hordes knows no bounds, coupled with heavy advertising.
Maybe this is dangerous, but ... I doubt it.
Some years back on a music/audio/equipment forum a poster asked how to clean his 33 RPM vinyl records without getting excessive Lead inhalation exposure. He was concerned, it was eventually revealed, by the “California Warning” on a 1oz. bottle of DiscWasher cleaning solution. It is nothing exotic, merely distilled water with a detergent in it.
There might be a few molecules of anything in everything, this “detectable levels” BS is therefore is madness. It can (and will) be used like a knife.
Consumer Reports == big steaming pile of freshly delivered bovine excrement
All this craziness comes from a law that was passed by Congress waaaay back in the 60’s that made ANY detectable level of a carcinogen substance illegal. Of course science instruments have become much more accurate and sensitive since then but the law is still in effect............

My first thought was it sounds like they have a Ratt problem:
28 samples, but no mention of brand names?
Makes me instantly skeptical when researchers and journalists are afraid they will get sued.
I read them in High School in about 1971 or so.
I have seen them implemented bit by bit ever since.
I never thought the two-way television would ever become a ‘thing’...................
What could possibly go wrong!

I am glad to see FReepers collective suspicion of such alarmist headlines.
We see such low IQ media nonsense all the time. There are so many unmentioned variables in this simplistic article.
What ARE government standards for heavy metals? Exactly what chemical forms of heavy metals were found? What tests were conducted? Are those commonly recognized tests for these particular products?
10 years ago, Dr Oz (yes that Dr. Oz) created a hoax on his show about arsenic in everyday apple juice given to kids. He let his story die (but never retracted) when it was pointed out they didn’t measure the actual dangerous forms of arsenic, the lab he used was not an actual food-testing lab, and other discrepancies.
A friend gave me a box of Godiva chocolates on Saturday. (A mixture of dark and milk chocolate.)
It’s sitting on my bar, unopened (for now.)
I hope Godivas are OK, because I am going to eat these. Not all at once, of course, but I am going to eat them. I will even share when people come over.
Don’t mess with my chocolate.
Enjoy them, you are safe.
There was a story the other day about someone who took those Ferrero-Rocher Chocolate candy balls out of the wrappers and replaced them with chocolate dipped BRUSSEL SPROUTS!..............🤢
Milk chocolate comes out better because the milk dilutes the cocoa.
