n this day in history, Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy — the 35th president of the United States — was assassinated while riding in an open-car motorcade in downtown Dallas, Texas.
The shocking event of 59 years ago happened near the end of JFK's third year as president.
Riding in the same car as Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy was Texas Gov. John B. Connally, as well as Connally's wife, Nellie Connally.
That same day, the suspect in the shooting, Lee Harvey Oswald, was arrested. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president that day as well as the stunned nation absorbed the blow of so suddenly and violently losing its elected president.

What’s the story of your photo ?
The Grassy Knoll.
At least three young reporters got national exposure during that weekend which greatly helped their careers. Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, and Bob Schieffer come to mind. Schieffer got an exclusive interview for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram with Oswald’s mother, even drove her to the newspaper office.
Not this year :)
I was in elementary school watching educational TV with my classmates and a teacher came in and broke the news. They had the older students (like me) watch over the younger students as we lined up for the school buses to take us home. The staff was afraid the little ones would be so upset, they’d run out into traffic.
Oswald was “groomed” as the patsy for many months.
His CIA handler was James Jesus Angleton (counterintelligence chief).
Lots of details are in this book:

The CIA recruited Oswald when he was a Marine in Japan. They taught him Russian, then sent him into Russia as a fake defector. Oswald was not the only fake defector at the time—the CIA sent several there.
Oswald’s first mission was to give the Russians technical data on the U2 spy plane because Eisenhower was negotiating with the Russians and the CIA wanted to prevent that negotiation from succeeding.
The Russians took the information Oswald gave them and managed to shoot down a U2 which scuttled the peace talks.
The CIA eventually got Oswald out of Russia (think of what it took to make that happen!) and sent him on some domestic missions.

I remember that day well as I was in the third grade and we were at afternoon recess, and some older girls came out to where we are sing songing, “The Presidents be shotttt”.
I also remember Oswald getting shot on Saturday morning, I was mad that no cartoons were on due to the news. It is awesome when you watched history being made.
It would be interesting to see what happened if JFK had finished his term.
My Dad always believed it was Cuba that ordered the hit but our government couldn’t tell us because it would lead to war with Russia.
The intelligence agencies didn’t murder Garfield or McKinley. And there was no massive coverup. That’s why.
The “Cuba” claim was the CIA’s original cover story—they sent a fake Oswald to Mexico to the Cuban embassy as part of that ruse.
That cover story was given to LBJ, and he in turn used it to convince Earl Warren that the Warren Commission had to blame everything on the patsy Oswald.
It was a good cover story given the many CIA assassination attempts on Castro—certainly cause for retaliation—but Castro did not have the ability to carry out such a plot.
In addition the Russians were involved in nuclear negotiations with JFK at the time and would not want him assassinated (and Castro did as he was told by the Russians).
I have read Dr Mary’s Monkey. It’s fantastic!!
JFK s was also committed in aging with Castro via intermediaries.
Your first sentence says it all. The saddest of sad days.
Communicating with Castro. Jeez.
This I know...LBJ was a crude basturd.
Heard he had his own sister whacked...because she was a stripper.
And had a press conference on the crapper.
Overshadowed by Kennedy’s death was the death of CS Lewis that day.
“LBJ did not order the hit. 20 elite Deep State men did, at the home of Dallas millionaire Clint Merchenson”
Correct—that was the final “go” meeting—but of course there were months of preparation put into place so that decision could be implemented if needed.
My mom’s birthday.
We were in a Montgomery Ward (Ft Lauderdale) buying a TV for her birthday.
All the tvs were tuned to the three majors.
It was kinda surreal.

So let us morn.
You do it.
I have to go yawn.
I had the opportunity to talk with the one of the owners of Hess and Eisenhardt can’t remember which one at this point, but he told me that when JFK’s Lincoln came back to them, he noticed a long scratch in the passenger side of the windshield that could only be attributed to a bullet hitting bullet proof glass. 1972.
