SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Four University of Idaho students who were found dead in a rental house near campus were stabbed to death in their beds and likely were asleep when they were attacked, a county coroner told a cable news channel.
Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt also told NewsNation on Thursday that each victim suffered multiple stab wounds from a “pretty large knife.”
“It has to be somebody pretty angry in order to stab four people to death,” Mabbutt told NewsNation. The victims were stabbed in the chest and upper body, the coroner said.
Efforts by The Associated Press to reach Mabbutt by telephone Friday were diverted to an Idaho State Police spokesperson, who did not immediately return messages.
In an evening statement, Moscow Police Department confirmed the coroner reported the victims were likely asleep and that some of the victims had defensive wounds. Police additionally said there were no signs of sexual assault.
Comments from Mabbutt and the police expanded on autopsy reports released Thursday, which concluded the four students were murdered by being stabbed to death.
Officers have not identified a suspect or found a weapon.
The killings have shaken Moscow, an Idaho Panhandle town of 25,000 residents that last saw a homicide about five years ago. The leafy college town is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of Spokane, Washington.
All four victims were members of fraternities and sororities: seniors Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho; junior Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls, Idaho; and freshman Ethan Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington. The women were roommates. The bodies were found around noon Sunday.
Moscow police released a map Friday and later its statement with a rough timeline of events leading up to the deaths.

I suppose if the victims were passed out in their beds, the killer could assess their posture and a quick stab through the heart would kill them instantly.

There should be a treasure trove of evidence here. Cell phones of the victims? DNA left behind (four murders is a full night's work)? Any ex-boyfriends/girlfriends?
I bet when this gets pieced together, the answer is going to look obvious.The autopsies ought to show if the guy(s) who killed them were lefthanded or righthanded.

Drug dealers don't normally murder their customers, especially in college towns.

Also, I heard that these inhabitants weren't security conscious and that the house was open to any and all visitors, streaming in and out at all hours.. BIG MISTAKE.
TOXICOLOGY report on these bodies will shed light, I believe. This HAS to be a drugs thing but one thing is sure: RETALIATION/RETRIBUTION AND WITH PASSION, BIG TIME.
I think the victims OWED MONEY and didn't pay up by the deadline. I'm thinking an MS-13 or CARTEL KILLING because as Trump says 'they like to use knives because they like to cause more suffering' or something like that.
I would think that a chair or lamp might have been used upon hearing the scream of a roommate.
Were the bodies tested for impairing drugs?
The article says they were likely asleep. Either they were asleep or on the phone. Or drunk. A lot of bars close at around 2:30 am.

Those could have happened after the first stab as there were multiple stab wounds.
True, but I don’t know a single female that doesn’t have her phone with her, or next to her bed at night.

Umpteen calls by the girl sound like she was trying to track down some ‘ol boy who wasn’t where he was suppose to be. I’m going to go put on a limb and say those are unrelated. People waiting on a dope delivery, etc. aren’t typically waiting in their respective beds. Further, 4 people slashed to death in bed isn’t dope dealer M.O. sure, cartels may do that as a ‘terror’ tactic and way of sending a message, but not low-level bum-phuck ID dealer behavior, IMHO. This situation has stalker, rejected dweeb features to me. Why’d he kill 4? Sometimes people are simply nuts and ‘homicidal rage’ is a very real thing. We’ll know soon.
The whole thing is odd.
They do if there’s a disagreement over payment. And honestly, I’ve seen another case where it was a case of mistaken identity. The previous tenants hadn’t paid their drug bills, so the dealer went to the place and killed the new tenants who had no idea WTH was going on.

I agree, and would add that maybe a rejected “wannabe lover” blamed the roommates for them not being together.
