I don’t know why they couldn’t just call him ‘Former Redskin’.
That’s probably how he identified...
Nephew of Earl Butz one-time secretary of agriculture and author of many a quote
I love how the writer goes to great lengths to avoid using the word REDSKINS.
Damn, if I had to put money on it, I would have put my odds on Dexter Manley to be the first to go from that line.
RIP Dave Butz.
I met Dave Butz, we wore both pumping gas at a service station on 123 in Mclean. This was back when the Skins were great! We had a chat, nice guy.
I grew up watching him play at the time he was the biggest center in the league and class act.
No cause of death given. 72 is not OLD-old anymore.
Probably some long term condition, to where death was not a big surprise.
Here’s the lead from Sports Illustrated item on the passing of Dave Butz...
“Dave Butz, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Commanders and Washington Ring of Fame member, has died at the age of 72, the team announced Friday.”. Friggin pansies, working the memory hole.
Dave Butz never played for Washington Commanders...he was a true Redskin. RIP
So sorry to hear this, particularly since I am 71 and played college football.
He was also a mainstay on the All-Madden Team. Dave Butz was one of Madden's favorites.
Butz was massive back in the days before weight training. Back in his playing days there was a saying “You may beat our team but you won’t beat our Butz.”
RIP. I pity the pallbearers.
Dave Butz was also a director of the NRA!
I was in a bar once when Dave Butz walked in. He filled up the entire doorway.
Yes indeed!
What you said!
Hail To The Redskins!
Amen
Corrected for my notes:
Former Washington Redskins defensive tackle Dave Butz.
Butz signed as a free agent in 1975 after two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Was a mainstay on the Washington Redskins’s first two Super Bowl-winning teams.
I was down in the Outer Banks back in the ‘80s and went to a McDonald’s there and I’m standing behind this dude he’s like a huge guy I’m 6’5 and this guy was big and he was Broad shouldered and I turned around to my ex and whispered “look at the size of this guy”
Anyway we were like third or fourth in line and he gets up the counter makes his order gets his order and turns around, it’s Butz. Gave a nod, he returned it. He was massive, I can’t imagine blocking that.
That might have been the first NFL player I ever stood next to, there’s been a couple more since and they were all huge.
Was he close to Dick Butkus?
Amazing how a true All-American and the scum of the earth can come out of the same institution.
RIP #65!
HAIL SKINS!
Looks like RFK is getting ready to be torn down....
