You can be as talented as Marlon Brando or Ingrid Bergman, you can write like William Shakespeare or Arthur Miller, you can have the screen presence of Ryan Gosling or Jennifer Lawrence. But if you look Latino, or if you have a Latino last name, the odds are against you in Hollywood.
And by Latino, I mean born in Latin America. Not Spain, nor anywhere else in Europe. Those are white peoples. We Latinos are 19% of the population and the largest ethnic group in America, and we’ve been here long before the conquests of the 1500s. How are we not more visible onscreen and onstage? If much of the United States was Mexico until the 1840s or later, how are we not more visible?
Mexicans in East L.A. would sign up to be extras in westerns at the "casting tree" from 1910 until the 1930s. They were put in the background of a genre of film that was an appropriation of Mexican culture. The words were all Spanish: “Cowboy” comes from the Spanish word vaquero. Lassos, rodeos, broncos, corrals, ranches, the chaps, the hats are all parts of Mexican culture. The 10-gallon hat comes from the Spanish phrase tan galan. No cowboy hats were being worn in England, Ireland, Germany or the 13 colonies. But they were worn in Mexico. And yet, who were the leads in the westerns?

I quickly perused the article. I did not see a mention of Cheech and Chong, and that’s racist

Another woke cry baby lib complaining about the wonderful and diverse world of hollywierd??
Well, my favorite U.S. born Latino actor was Leo Carillo. His Latino family was in California since the mid 18th century. He is known for playing The Cisco Kid’s sidekick Pancho. The Cisco Kid himself, Duncan Renaldo, was raised in Romania.
I think J.L. should blame Charlton Heston, who took two parts that could have gone to Latinos: “A Touch of Evil” and “El Cid”. That Lithuanian Charles Bronson, sometimes convincingly played Latinos. Also consider Natalie Wood, the not so convincing Maria in West Side Story.
If you are going to be beaten out, at least you are beaten out by Heston, Bronson, and Wood.
According to IMDB, he had 163 credits in his career.
You also need viewers in theater seats. We, the viewers, make the decision on what & who we want to see in movies...with our dollars.
Screw off, Juan.
Rita Moreno are Jennifer Lopez two Latinas I thought of easily. Both have had careers for decades.
I watched the Skip Gates show on NPR of about Leguzuiamo’s geneology.
It seems he had been culturally appropriating Puerto Rican for 50 years, but had no Puerto Rican ancestor, even in his DNA.
He’s Columbian.
But why does he complain? He should be complaining about Latin American Countries speaking the toungue of their colonial oppresssors (Spanish). They should all learn English to bring them out of poverty.
And a magcial island.
And a magical island.

“We Latinos are 19% of the population and the largest ethnic group in America, and we’ve been here long before the conquests of the 1500s.”
Completely false. Not a single Latino existed on this earth before Columbus’ voyage to the Americas and that was only in 1492.
Leguizamo set off too many gaydars during a time when being gay was not an asset to getting a job in Hollywood.
People born in central and south america are not latino. They are indigenous inca, maya, caribs. We should never allow their culture to abrogated by someone from spain.
